Overview

AIMP is a free audio player for Windows, with a separate edition for Android. Beyond playing music files, AIMP bundles a set of audio tools. These include a converter that also rips audio CDs, a tag editor, an internet radio recorder and a task scheduler with an alarm clock. It plays local files, network storage, cloud folders and podcasts.

Formats and audio output

AIMP reads a wide range of lossless and lossy formats, plus tracker modules such as MOD, XM, IT and S3M, along with MPEG-DASH streams from YouTube. AIMP supports CUE sheets, so a single image file of a whole album appears in the playlist as separate tracks.

The player processes sound internally at 32-bit. Output can go through DirectSound, ASIO or WASAPI. This includes WASAPI exclusive mode, which bypasses the Windows mixer and sends audio straight to the device.

Equalizer, effects and transitions

The 20-band equalizer sits alongside a set of effects: reverb, flanger, chorus, echo, pitch, tempo, speed, bass and an enhancer. The effects also include a voice remover that suppresses the vocal part of a track. Volume normalization works either from peak levels or from ReplayGain data. The volume control can follow a logarithmic scale with loudness compensation.

Between tracks, AIMP can fade, cross-mix one song into the next, insert pauses or remove silence.

Playlists that run side by side

AIMP keeps several playlists open, so one can play while you edit another. Each playlist has its own view settings: one or two lines per track, and grouping by a custom template, such as album or artist. You can lock a playlist to stop accidental changes. A search box looks for files across all open playlists at once.

You can build smart playlists from the music library or from one or more folders, with filters and grouping rules. A playback queue sets a temporary order without rearranging the playlist itself, and bookmarks keep places to return to.

Music library and listening statistics

In the music library, AIMP records playback statistics, marks tracks you have listened to and calculates ratings automatically from that history. AIMP can also scrobble listening data to Last.fm, Libre.fm or ListenBrainz.

Cloud storage and internet radio

AIMP plays music stored online, connecting to OneDrive, Google Drive, Dropbox, Yandex Disk, Mail.ru Cloud and any custom WebDAV server.

Internet radio streams in MP3, AAC/AAC+, OGG and WAV play directly. AIMP can record a running stream to APE, FLAC, OGG, WAV, WavPack, WMA or MP3. Alternatively, it can save MP3 and AAC streams as they arrive, without re-encoding.

Audio converter and CD ripping

The AIMP audio converter encodes several files at once using multiple processor threads. It works in three modes. The converter can turn each source into its own output file or join all files in a folder into one result. The latter option can include a CUE sheet to keep track positions. The third mode merges every source into a single file.

Output formats include MP3, FLAC, APE, OGG, OPUS, WAV, WMA, WMA Pro, MusePack and WavPack. You can use other formats by connecting external command-line encoders. The converter also rips audio CDs, can normalize volume during conversion and can shut down the computer when the job finishes.

Tag editor

The tag editor handles ID3v1, ID3v2, APE, Vorbis, WMA and M4A tags, one file at a time or in batches. It fills tags from file names. It renames and sorts files into folders using templates built from tag fields. It also numbers tracks automatically and changes letter case or transliterates text.

The editor also calculates ReplayGain values, detects BPM and includes a chapter editor for marking sections inside long files, along with CUE markup.

Scheduler and alarm clock

AIMP’s scheduler holds any number of tasks. A timer or an event triggers each one. Tasks can repeat once, several times a day, daily, weekly, monthly or yearly. A task can start, pause or resume playback, skip tracks, or start or stop radio recording. It can also change the volume with a fade, close the player, or put the computer to sleep, hibernate or shut it down. The alarm clock can wake the computer from sleep.

Skins, hotkeys and plugins

The interface uses interchangeable skins. Charm UI is the standard skin in a modern flat style. Bliss comes from AIMP4, and Pandemic is the classic skin from AIMP3. More skins are available from the add-on catalog. A skin editor is available for making new ones. AIMP scales for 4K and high-DPI screens. You can control it with local and global hotkeys. Global hotkeys work while another program is in focus.

Plugins add or extend functions. Developers can use the published SDK to write them. The add-on catalog also offers icons, encoders and wallpapers, and the interface supports multiple languages and users.

AIMP for Android

The Android edition brings multiple playlists, folder-based playlists, a 20-band equalizer and ReplayGain normalization. It offers playback speed from 0.5x to 3x for audiobooks. It plays from Samba shares, FTP and WebDAV storage. It also edits tags and lyrics, and includes a sleep timer, widgets and Android Auto support.
