Overview

foobar2000 is a music player and library manager for audio files that you already own or can reach on a network. It opens individual tracks, folders, playlists, audio CDs, and supported radio streams. It does not sell music or replace a subscription catalogue. Its main job is to organize playback around file metadata, precise output settings, and a layout that the listener can rearrange.

Library before artwork

foobar2000 can watch selected music folders and build a searchable library from their tags. Album, artist, date, genre, disc number, and track number become fields that can drive views and playlists. This is different from browsing a folder tree: one album can remain together even when its files sit in separate directories, provided the tags agree.

Automatic playlists use queries rather than a saved list of filenames. A query can collect unplayed tracks, one format, a rating range, or music added during a chosen period. The result changes when the library changes. An ordinary playlist stays fixed until the user edits it.

Tags change files

The Properties window edits tags across one track or a selection. foobar2000 can fill values, copy fields, remove fields, and derive tags from a filename pattern. It can also rename or move files from tag values. These operations require a careful preview because a wrong pattern can apply the same error to an entire album. Read-only files and formats with limited tag support can also prevent the intended edit.

ReplayGain scanning measures perceived loudness and stores adjustment data with the tracks. Playback can then use track gain for mixed playlists or album gain to preserve the level differences within one record. Scanning does not replace the audio data. Files need ReplayGain information before the player can make that choice reliably.

Conversion needs encoders

foobar2000 can rip an audio CD and convert any source format that it can decode. The output side has an extra dependency. The Converter component must be installed, and most compressed output formats need separate encoder binaries. The official encoder pack covers common choices, but selecting an output that has no encoder produces a setup problem rather than a converted file.

Conversion can apply tag transfer, filename patterns, ReplayGain processing, and DSP effects. Turning a lossy file into another lossy format cannot restore information that the first encoding removed. The conversion is useful for device compatibility or a smaller copy, not for improving source quality.

Playback order matters

Random and Shuffle sound similar but behave differently. Random chooses the next track without maintaining a full-list history, apart from avoiding the same item twice in a row. A repeat can therefore appear before every track has played. Shuffle builds an internal randomized order and works through it before repeating. A listener who wants one pass through a large library should choose Shuffle.

Components add risk

Components can add decoders, interface panels, playback statistics, remote outputs, effects, or special tagging commands. Each component declares the systems it supports. A component written for a different major release may fail to load, and duplicate component files can also trigger an error. Installing one extension at a time makes a failure easier to isolate.

Local-network playback and remote-control functions can send music to compatible players without uploading a personal library to a vendor account. Network discovery, device support, and firewall rules still determine whether the target appears. foobar2000 itself states that it collects no telemetry or user data.
