Google Chrome is a web browser that opens websites in tabs and runs web applications inside separate browser processes. The page title identifies an archived release rather than the maintained browser that Google distributes now. It can still display ordinary pages on a compatible computer, but it should not handle current passwords, payments, private mail, or routine browsing. Web security changes continuously, while an archived browser keeps the weaknesses and protocol limits of its release period.
Tabs isolate work
Each tab holds a page, while the address bar handles web addresses and searches. Google Chrome separates many tabs, extensions, and browser services into different processes so one failed page does not always close the whole session. That separation costs memory. Opening many heavy sites can make the computer swap data to disk even when each individual tab appears idle.
Google Chrome incognito windows keep their local history and cookies out of the normal profile after every incognito window closes. They do not hide traffic from a website, network administrator, Internet provider, or signed-in service. A downloaded file also remains on the computer after the window closes.
Profiles separate sessions
Google Chrome profiles give different people or work contexts separate bookmarks, history, passwords, extensions, and settings. They are convenient on a shared computer, but they do not lock one person away from another. Anyone who can use the same operating-system account can switch Chrome profiles. Sensitive separation therefore needs different Windows or macOS user accounts, not a colored profile icon.
Deleting a profile removes its local bookmarks, history, passwords, and settings from that computer. Data already saved to a signed-in Google account may still exist online, while local-only data may disappear permanently. The user should confirm which data has synchronized before removing a profile during troubleshooting.
Sync crosses devices
Signing in can store bookmarks, passwords, extensions, settings, payment information, and optional tabs or history in a Google account. That makes the same material available on another signed-in device. It also means a change on one device can propagate elsewhere. Choosing only the categories that need synchronization limits unintended sharing.
A public or borrowed computer should use guest browsing and end the session afterward. Signing into a normal profile can leave account access or synchronized material behind if the user closes the window without signing out.
Extensions carry access
Extensions can change pages, block requests, manage downloads, or connect to outside services. Those abilities require permissions. A useful extension can still read a broad set of sites if its permission request allows it, so the install prompt matters. Removing unused extensions reduces both background work and the number of components trusted with browsing data.
Archived means exposed
Google Chrome normally downloads security updates and applies them after a restart. The archived build represented by this page no longer follows that maintained update channel. Modern sites may reject its connection, render incorrectly, or depend on browser capabilities it lacks. Safe Browsing data also cannot substitute for fixes to the browser engine itself.
Keeping this package for compatibility testing inside an isolated environment is different from making it the default browser. For normal use, install the current maintained Chrome release and restart it when an update waits. An old site that only works in an obsolete browser should stay separated from personal accounts and general Internet access.
