About File sharing

File sharing covers several distinct technologies that happen to share a goal: moving files between machines or between people. Some of these tools work on a local network, sending a file from one computer to another in the same room without the internet involved. Others are peer-to-peer clients that connect to a wider swarm.

The local-transfer tools are the simplest case. They are handy for shifting a large file between a laptop and a desktop, or to a phone, faster than email or a cloud upload allows. Nothing leaves your network, so there is little to weigh beyond whether both devices run a compatible app.

Peer-to-peer and torrent clients are the larger part of this group. The technology itself is neutral, and it is used to distribute legitimate software, large datasets, and open media. It is also widely used for copyrighted material, and that is where the law in your country becomes your concern rather than the software's.

A third type appears here too: tools that build a virtual local network over the internet, so distant machines behave as if they were on the same network. That is useful for games and private file access. Across all of these, check what a client connects to and what it exposes before you run it.
