Intel Chipset Device Software is a Windows utility that supplies identification information for Intel chipset components. It installs INF files that let Windows display the correct hardware names in Device Manager. The package was previously called Intel Chipset Software Installation Utility.
INF files
An INF is a text file that gives Windows information about a piece of hardware. For Intel Chipset Device Software, that information is primarily the component’s product name. The useful output is the name Windows shows for the device, allowing someone inspecting the computer’s hardware to identify the chipset component by its proper label.
Identification versus driver installation
Intel Chipset Device Software does not install AGP or USB drivers. Its device identification information cannot replace a missing driver or correct an AGP, AGP GART or USB driver problem. A chipset component receiving its correct name in Device Manager therefore does not mean that this package has supplied a new operating driver for it.
