iTop Data Recovery scans storage for file records that Windows no longer shows through normal folders. It is intended for deleted documents, an emptied Recycle Bin, a formatted volume or a storage location that has become inaccessible. iTop Data Recovery does not reconstruct a previous desktop or repair Windows. It searches for recoverable file data, lets the user inspect the results and copies chosen items to a destination.
Stop using the source
Recovery starts before the scan. Deleting a file usually removes its normal directory reference before every underlying block disappears. New downloads, application updates and even installation activity can reuse those blocks. The official recovery guidance states that the chance of success depends partly on how much new data has been written after the loss.
For that reason, installing iTop Data Recovery on the affected drive can work against the recovery attempt. A separate system drive or another computer is safer when the missing material matters. Recovered files should also go to a different physical device. Saving them back onto the source can overwrite another item that the scan found but has not copied yet.
Choose a narrow scan
iTop Data Recovery can scan a selected folder, the Recycle Bin or a complete storage device. Supported locations include internal drives, external disks, USB storage and memory cards. A narrow location finishes sooner and makes the result easier to inspect. A complete device scan is more suitable when the old folder structure has disappeared or the volume was formatted.
File-type selection can reduce noise when the user needs one document family or a set of photographs. It can also hide an item if its extension or recovered signature falls outside the selected category. When the first attempt finds nothing useful, repeating the scan with broader type and location choices is more sensible than assuming the data never existed.
Read the result
The result browser groups discovered items by type and location. iTop Data Recovery can preview common documents, photos and video material before copying it. It also assigns conditions such as Excellent, Good or Poor. These labels describe the scan’s estimate, not a promise that every byte inside a large file remains intact.
A photograph preview can confirm the image instead of relying on a damaged filename. Large videos, archives and databases need more caution because a small preview may not exercise the entire file. A recovered archive should open and test its entries, while a recovered document should be checked beyond its first page.
Names may be missing
A quick deletion may leave the original folder and filename available. Formatting or severe directory damage can force the scan to identify data by its internal signature instead. The result can then have a generated name and no useful original path. Sorting by size, type and modification information helps, but a large scan can still require manual review.
iTop Data Recovery can copy selected items after the preview stage. The recovered set should remain separate from the damaged device until the user verifies it and creates another backup. If the drive clicks, disconnects or reports hardware errors, repeated software scans can add stress; making a sector-level image or using a recovery specialist is safer than repeatedly reading failing hardware.
