Overview

iTop Screen Recorder is a Windows program for capturing what happens on a PC screen, from a webcam and from audio sources. Its own editors then let users trim or rework the result. It also takes screenshots and includes AI tools for speech, images and video. iTop Screen Recorder has a free edition that marks output with a watermark. The paid Pro edition removes it and unlocks scheduling and higher capture limits.

Four recording modes

The Record tab is split into Screen, Webcam, Only Audio and Game. Screen mode starts with the capture area. The choices are the full screen, a dragged region, a selected or locked window, fixed aspect ratios, or a recently used area. Users can switch the speaker, microphone, webcam and mouse on or off individually before pressing REC. A three-second countdown runs by default, and Ctrl+F9 or the Done button ends the recording.

When the webcam toggle is on in Screen mode, the program records the camera image as an overlay on the screen capture. Webcam mode records the camera alone and adds brightness and background controls, including blurring or a virtual background. Only Audio mode records system sound and microphone input without video and offers voice-changing effects.

Game mode is meant for gameplay. It shows a frame-rate counter, has HUD and Boost options, and lets the user add games it does not detect. A separate high-performance setting keeps high-frame-rate captures smooth. Enhanced Mode is meant for windows that come out as a black picture with sound only under normal recording.

Tools during a recording

A floating toolbar stays on screen while iTop Screen Recorder is capturing. It provides doodling, pause, screenshots, microphone mute, a magnifier, a spotlight and a teleprompter for a prepared or newly written script. Users can hide the toolbar or keep it out of the recorded picture.

Keypress visualization, toggled with Alt+K, prints each pressed key on screen. Mouse settings add a cursor highlight, coloured click animations and click sounds. Auto Focus magnifies the area around the cursor or text input as it moves. A real-time backup copy lets users recover a recording after a crash, a full disk or a power cut.

Phones and tablets

iTop Screen Recorder can mirror a connected iPhone, iPad or Android device on the PC and record that screen. iOS connections may require installing and enabling the Bonjour Service, and Android setup follows on-screen steps.

Scheduled and timed captures

Pro users can create daily or weekly recording schedules, each with a name, a start and end time, and a capture region. Each schedule also specifies an action for when it finishes: do nothing, put the PC to sleep or shut it down. A second option, auto-ending recording, starts immediately with Run Now and stops after a set duration.

Output formats and quality

Videos can be saved as MP4, AVI, MKV, MOV, FLV, TS, WEBM or animated GIF, and audio as MP3, AAC, AC3, FLAC or WMAV2. Settings cover video size, frame rate, bitrate and quality, plus audio bitrate, frequency and channels. The free edition records at up to 1080p and 60 frames per second; Pro lists quality of up to 4K and 120 frames per second and unlimited recording time.

Watermarks differ by edition. Free output carries the iTop Screen Recorder watermark, while Pro can record with no watermark or apply a custom text or image mark.

Screenshots and scrolling capture

Still captures cover a selected region, the full screen, the active window or a scrolling window. Scrolling capture extends the image as a web page, Word file or PDF scrolls, producing one tall picture. Users can annotate captures with frames, circles, lines and text, then save them as JPG, PNG, WEBP, BMP or TIF. They can also copy captures to the clipboard, pin them to the desktop or share them to Facebook, Twitter or Imgur.

Recording library and editors

The Files area lists videos, audio and images on separate tabs, sortable by time, duration, name or size. From a file’s menu, users can play, rename, compress or remove background noise from a recording. They can also upload it or open it in one of the two editors.

The Quick Editor covers trimming, splitting, cropping, and adding filters, stickers, background music or subtitles before export. The Advanced Editor works with projects that can be saved and reopened. Its timeline holds multiple video and audio tracks. Users can split, merge, rotate or flip clips and layer them with text, images, effects and transitions. The editor can generate subtitles automatically. On export, the user picks the aspect ratio, resolution, quality and format.

AI and file utilities

Text to Speech turns typed text into narration in more than 50 languages, with control over pauses, speed, pitch and volume. Some voices require Pro. Remove BG cuts the background from an image and can place a new one behind the subject. Unblur sharpens images and videos and can restrict the effect to portraits or blur the background instead. Free use of these AI tools is limited; Pro removes the limit.

The Compressor shrinks one video or a batch to a chosen level, and the Denoiser removes background and ambient noise from audio and video recordings.
