Nero Video is a Windows application for editing videos and photo slideshows, exporting movies, and authoring DVD or Blu-ray video discs. It combines storyboard editing with a multitrack timeline. A free trial is available for the paid application.
Storyboard and timeline editing
Express mode arranges clips in a storyboard. Moving the cursor to a frame and splitting separates the footage into pieces you can remove from the sequence. Text and transitions can then be added between the remaining clips.
Advanced mode uses a multitrack timeline and a Cutter tool for splitting footage. Inserting a clip with Shift-drag pushes later clips forward. Alt-drag overwrites from the drop point, so a longer replacement can also overwrite subsequent clips.
Nero Video works with video, photos and music in the same project. MP4 and AVI footage can be used for video-disc projects, and H.265/HEVC decoding supports importing that compressed video format. Multitrack editing supports HD, 4K and 8K material.
Titles and frame effects
Text effects are placed on the timeline from the Effect Palette. Font, color and size controls determine their appearance, while the preview provides the text-entry area. The resulting titles become part of the rendered video.
The Crop effect removes chosen percentages from the frame's four edges. Scale then adjusts the remaining image within the composition. Express Effect Control can apply an effect across all clips or pictures, avoiding separate adjustments to every item.
Audio levels
Advanced editing separates whole-track volume from individual clip levels. A track control changes its overall volume, while Audio Level changes a selected video or music clip. Express mode provides volume adjustment directly on the clip.
Automatic movies and slideshows
1-Click Video Story assembles dropped photos and videos into an editable theme project. The theme supplies an introduction, ending, effects, captions and matching music. Choosing a preferred theme as the default changes the starting arrangement for subsequent stories.
The orientation of the input affects that arrangement. Portrait-only material produces a vertical project; landscape or mixed material produces a landscape project. In the latter case, automatic black-bar removal is applied to portrait footage and can be undone per clip.
Portrait video projects
Nero Video's Edit Vertical Video workspace starts a project for 9:16 output. Its footage and pictures are edited within that portrait composition. A landscape project cannot become a vertical project solely by changing settings at export.
Automatic black-bar removal can also be disabled for future imports. This leaves the framing decision with the editor rather than applying the adjustment to every incoming item. The global setting takes effect when the media is imported again.
Project files and video export
An NVC file stores editing instructions and references to source media. It remains dependent on those files when reopened. Save project file and assets gathers the project and its media into one folder for archiving or continued editing elsewhere.
Export renders the composition into a playable file, with MP4, MPG and MKV among the output choices. Movie Options sets the project's resolution, including UHD/4K. Preview quality is adjusted separately, and increasing project resolution cannot recover detail absent from the source.
Video discs, menus and chapters
DVD-Video authoring converts imported movies into MPEG-2 video and a navigable disc structure. This produces a different result from copying MP4 or AVI files to a data DVD. Still pictures first become a slideshow video title in the editor.
Nero Video also authors Blu-ray discs with menus. Title order determines the menu order, and menu backgrounds can use JPG or PNG pictures or MP4 video. Chapter markers identify positions within a title that viewers can navigate to directly.
Menu preview lets you inspect pages and navigation before rendering and burning. If the movie exceeds the disc's capacity, Fit to disc adjusts picture quality to accommodate it. DVD authoring selects one audio language; it does not create multiple selectable language soundtracks.
