SlimBrowser is a free Windows web browser from FlashPeak for visiting websites, using web applications and working with content found online. It uses the Gecko rendering engine and includes tools for filtering advertisements, transferring files, translating text and preparing images for upload within the browser.
Ad filtering
SlimBrowser’s ad blocker works with both resource addresses and page elements. A URL rule prevents a matching resource from downloading, while CSS selector rules identify components within the page. Users can subscribe to filter lists suited to the languages of the sites they visit, and those subscriptions receive periodic rule updates.
The browser also accepts personal rules. Its component selection tool highlights an item under the pointer and lets the user block it through its URL or CSS selector. If filtering removes wanted content, an exception can apply to the current subdomain or the parent domain and its subdomains.
File downloads
A file link can be passed to the Turbocharged Download Manager from the link’s context menu. SlimBrowser divides the file into sections and downloads those sections over multiple simultaneous connections. Transfer speed still depends on the internet connection and the server supplying the file.
Download jobs appear together in the manager, with a full view for examining their details. Transfers can be paused and resumed, including after the browser has been closed and reopened.
Video downloads and Picture-in-Picture
The integrated YouTube downloader offers a Download Video button with the formats and resolutions available for the selected video. Choices can include MP4 and WebM, and the transfer runs through SlimBrowser’s multithreaded manager. Selecting MP3 extraction adds an audio conversion after the video has finished downloading. The resulting audio file uses the video’s name and is placed in the same folder.
Video viewing has a separate control: Picture-in-Picture moves playback into a floating window while other tabs or applications remain in use. Captions can accompany playback on supported services and websites supplying compatible subtitle tracks.
Translation
SlimBrowser can translate an entire web page or just a selected passage. A one-off selection command returns the translation in a small popup, keeping the original page available beneath it.
Automatic selection translation changes when that operation occurs. Once enabled, highlighting text and releasing the mouse triggers the translation, without invoking the command for each new selection. Whole-page translation remains a separate action for reading more of a page in another language.
Page captures
Whole-page capture saves a JPEG image of the current page, including the portion below the visible window. The user supplies a filename for the saved image.
For a smaller extract, selected-area capture uses a rectangle drawn with the mouse. That selection can be copied to the clipboard or saved as an image file.
Photo Salon
Photo Salon processes pictures at the point of upload. It can reduce their resolution, crop the selected area and adjust brightness, contrast, hue or saturation. Sharpening, blurring and grayscale conversion provide additional changes to the outgoing image. These operations create the upload image while leaving the original high-resolution photograph unaffected.
The same tool handles arrangements involving several pictures. Photos can share a frame template or be tiled into an array with rows and columns. A signature image, borders and tilting effects can be added before upload, and batch processing applies the preparation to multiple photos.
Customizing SlimBrowser
URL aliases associate a short name with a website address. Typing that name opens the assigned destination, giving frequently visited sites a keyboard shortcut within the address bar. SlimBrowser also offers a side-tab display, automatic reloading for individual tabs, mouse gestures and a customizable toolbar.
Additional extensions and themes are available through the Add-ons manager and the Mozilla add-on library. The manager provides a search box for finding add-ons by name and a place to manage those added to the browser.
