Overview

Debian is a general-purpose Linux operating system assembled from packages maintained through the Debian project. It can run a desktop computer, server, virtual machine, or small device. The installer places a base system on disk and can add a desktop environment, server roles, or a smaller command-line setup. After installation, APT reads configured repositories to install software and apply security or maintenance updates.

Release branches

Debian stable is the normal choice when predictable package behavior matters. Its package versions change conservatively during the life of a release, while security fixes and important corrections continue to arrive. Testing contains the package set being prepared for the next stable release. Unstable is the active integration branch where maintainers upload new packages.

Those names describe different maintenance expectations, not simple speed settings. Replacing stable repository entries with testing or unstable entries can upgrade a large part of the system. Mixing branches without a deliberate pinning policy can leave APT choosing versions that do not belong together. Third-party repositories create the same risk when they publish packages built for another Debian release.

Installer choices

The installer handles language, networking, users, disks, package selection, and the boot loader. Guided partitioning can use an entire disk or available space, while manual partitioning exposes the actual devices and filesystems. A wrong target can erase an existing operating system or backup. Disk model, capacity, partition table, and mount points should be checked before the installer writes changes.

Desktop selection changes the initial package set. A minimal installation can add a desktop later, and a desktop installation can still run server services. Debian does not require one graphical interface, so instructions written for GNOME may name menus that do not exist under KDE Plasma, Xfce, or another selected desktop.

Firmware gaps

Some network, graphics, audio, and storage devices need firmware that does not ship as ordinary open-source code. Debian installation media can contain distributable non-free firmware and the installer can detect many missing files. It may still encounter hardware whose firmware is absent from the image. A missing network firmware file is especially awkward because the machine may need the network to retrieve packages while the network adapter cannot start.

The installer can ask for firmware from removable media. Supplying the correct file may make the device usable for that session, but a packaged firmware installation is easier to maintain after setup. A loose file copied only during installation does not automatically gain the update tracking of an installed Debian package.

Package boundaries

APT resolves dependencies and records installed packages, while the repository components describe their licensing and dependency relationships. Enabling another component can make required firmware or software visible, but it changes what the machine is allowed to install. Repository configuration should match the intended policy rather than be copied blindly from an unrelated troubleshooting post.

A release upgrade is a system operation, not an ordinary application update. Debian’s release notes document known issues and required preparation for each transition. Backups, free disk space, disabled third-party repositories, and a way to recover remote access matter before changing release names. Debian makes the installed system reproducible through packages, but local configuration and external repositories still determine whether that transition is straightforward.
