Overview

Webroot SecureAnywhere Internet Security monitors a Windows computer for malicious files, suspicious behavior, unsafe web activity, and attempts to capture identity data. A normal scan checks objects and running activity, while Identity Shield concentrates on usernames, passwords, security codes, account numbers, and card data used around browsers. The account portal adds another layer: it can display enrolled computers, apply security policies, and queue scans without someone sitting at each machine.

Enrollment needs a scan

A computer joins the portal through the account’s keycode. Installation alone does not complete the association. Webroot SecureAnywhere Internet Security must use the correct keycode and finish an initial scan before the computer appears in the expected account view.

A multi-device keycode can enroll several computers within its seat limit. Reusing the wrong keycode can place a machine under another account or leave the administrator looking in the wrong console. Renaming a computer in the portal changes its management label; it does not rename Windows itself.

Identity Shield watches inputs

Identity Shield evaluates programs and websites that handle sensitive input. Its purpose differs from scanning a downloaded installer. It focuses on attempts to intercept identity and financial data while the user types or submits them.

A legitimate program can still need classification when it interacts with protected browser data. Changing that classification alters Webroot’s trust decision rather than changing the program’s own permissions or account. An incorrect allow choice can weaken protection, while an incorrect block choice can stop a trusted utility from interacting with the browser as expected.

Heuristics vary by source

Webroot SecureAnywhere Internet Security separates heuristic levels for local drives, USB devices, Internet sources, network locations, optical media, and offline sources. This lets an administrator treat a downloaded executable differently from an existing local file or a device on the internal network.

More aggressive is not automatically more accurate. The official guide warns that High and Maximum policies can generate many alerts and block legitimate programs. A new strict policy should therefore start with a limited group of computers where its decisions can be reviewed.

Remote policy wins

The portal can set Low, Medium, High, or Maximum security policies. These remote choices override local user configuration. A person at the computer may change a visible option and later see the portal policy restore a different value.

This behavior can look like a settings fault when it is actually central management. Troubleshooting must compare the local screen with the assigned portal policy. Removing the visible alert on one computer does not change the rule that sent it.

Commands wait for contact

The portal can queue Scan and Cleanup actions. Scan requests a security check, while Cleanup quarantines detected items automatically. Webroot SecureAnywhere Internet Security performs the command when the target computer receives it.

An offline laptop cannot act immediately. The portal may show a pending command until the laptop starts and contacts the service. Sending the same action repeatedly does not make a powered-off computer receive it sooner, and Cleanup deserves more caution than Scan because it changes detected files without another local selection step.

Quarantine changes access

Quarantine prevents an item from running in its original location while retaining a managed record for review. Restoring an item reverses that containment decision; deleting it removes that recovery path. A business file and a malicious executable can share a misleading name, so the file path and detection record matter before restoration.

If an allowed business program triggers under a strict policy, the administrator needs to fix the classification or policy scope rather than repeatedly restoring the same object. Otherwise the next scan can repeat the action.

Shutdown is deliberate

Stopping protection requires a CAPTCHA confirmation. Shutdown removes the tray icon and stops the active protection components. Closing a settings window does not have the same effect.

Webroot SecureAnywhere Internet Security does not restart merely because the user opens the browser again. After shutdown, the user must start it through the Windows Start menu. This deliberate sequence helps prevent a casual click from disabling protection, but it can also leave the computer unprotected if a troubleshooting session ends without the restart step.
