Sophos Home is antivirus and web-control software managed through an online account. A small endpoint component runs on each protected computer, while the Sophos Home dashboard holds settings, history, and device status. This arrangement lets one account manage several household computers without sitting in front of each one. It also means that many changes happen in a browser rather than inside a traditional local antivirus window.
Manage through the dashboard
The dashboard lists protected computers separately. Selecting one opens its status, activity history, protection controls, and web-filtering rules. Sophos Home needs an account for this management path. A computer that is offline cannot receive a new cloud setting until it reconnects.
Remote management is useful for another family computer, but the status belongs to the selected device. Confirm the computer name before changing a rule. Allowing a site or excluding a folder on one device does not automatically repeat that change across every system under the account.
Run the right scan
Background protection checks activity as files are opened or used. A manual scan can examine a chosen file or folder from its context menu, while a scheduled scan runs at the configured time. Sophos Home records detections and recent actions in the dashboard history.
A scheduled scan does not run when a laptop is asleep, offline, or operating on battery power. It also does not immediately catch up at an arbitrary later moment; the next attempt waits for the following scheduled day and time. Keep the laptop awake, connected, and on its charger when the schedule matters.
Treat exclusions carefully
Sophos Home can exclude a file, folder, application, or website that the user trusts. A folder exception also reaches its subfolders. That can solve a false detection, but it creates an area the corresponding scanner no longer checks.
Use the smallest exact exception and remove it after the underlying issue is resolved. Do not exclude a broad downloads folder to make one installer run. On macOS, antivirus exceptions affect on-access checks but do not apply in the same way to full or on-demand scans, so a later manual scan can still report the item.
Filter by category
Web filtering controls categories rather than building every rule from individual URLs. A household can allow, warn about, or block categories on each computer. These controls apply per machine, not per person, so two Windows accounts on the same computer inherit the same filtering decision.
A modern website may load video, chat, login, and delivery resources from different domains. Allowing the visible domain may not restore a blocked component when another required domain remains in a restricted category. A site can also belong to more than one category. Review the dashboard event before adding exceptions blindly.
Know the IPv6 gap
Sophos Home states that its web category filtering is not compatible with IPv6. This matters on networks where a computer can reach destinations through both IPv4 and IPv6. Antivirus file scanning and category-based web control are different layers; an active antivirus status does not prove that the web category rule covered every network path.
Check the behavior on the actual home connection and browser. If category control is a household requirement, confirm which address family the computer uses and do not rely on the dashboard switch alone as proof of enforcement.
Read a detection
A blocked item can be malware, a potentially unwanted application, or legitimate software caught by a rule. Sophos Home history supplies the category and action needed for the next decision. Restoring or excluding the file without understanding that category removes the protection that stopped it.
Keep the endpoint online long enough for status and history to synchronize before judging a remote computer. If the device remains offline, the dashboard can show the last known state rather than evidence of a fresh scan. Sophos Home centralizes management, but it cannot inspect a powered-off machine.
