Sticky Notes turns short text, pen marks, and pictures into individual notes that can stay open on the Windows desktop. It is meant for reminders, temporary reference, and small pieces of information that do not need the page structure of a full notebook. Sticky Notes saves each note in a central list. Closing a note window therefore hides that window without removing the stored note.
Windows and list differ
A note can open as its own movable desktop window, while the Notes list gathers every saved note in one place. Closing the window with X sends the note back to that list. If only one note appears when Sticky Notes starts, the ellipsis menu can return to Notes list.
This distinction prevents a closed reminder from disappearing permanently, but it can also make a note seem lost. Searching the list by a word or phrase filters the stored notes and is faster than reopening each window.
Delete has no undo
Delete note is different from closing. It removes the note permanently, and Sticky Notes has no undo command that restores it. When synchronization is active, deletion also affects the shared account copy rather than only the visible desktop window.
The settings area has a Confirm before deleting switch. Enabling it adds a deliberate pause before permanent removal. That prompt does not turn deletion into a recoverable recycle-bin action; it only reduces accidental confirmation.
Sync follows the account
Sticky Notes works locally without requiring an account, but cross-device access requires the same Microsoft account on each supported surface. On phones and tablets, the notes appear inside OneNote rather than as identical floating desktop windows. They can also appear on the web and in supported Outlook views.
Signing into a different account creates a separate synchronized collection. A note that exists under one account will not appear merely because the device has another Microsoft service signed in. The Sticky Notes account shown in settings must match the one used on the other device.
Content stays simple
A note accepts typed text, touch or pen input on a compatible screen, and pictures. Basic formatting can emphasize text or create a list, but Sticky Notes does not let the user choose a different font face or text size. Enlarging the note window changes the available space, not the stored typography.
Copying note content into a OneNote page creates material inside the notebook, which is separate from keeping the original sticky note. Later changes do not turn those two objects into one continuously linked item.
Search reads note text
The search field filters by words or phrases found inside notes. Color can make visual groups, but it is not a folder structure. A growing collection therefore depends on recognizable wording if the user expects search to find it later.
Clearing the search restores the complete Notes list. It does not delete notes that were absent from the filtered view. On mobile, the Sticky Notes tab separates these notes from ordinary OneNote notebook pages during search.
Topmost is unavailable
Sticky Notes cannot currently force a note to remain above every other application. Pinning the program to the taskbar gives quick access to the list and the New note action, but it does not make an open note permanently topmost. Another window can still cover it.
The taskbar shortcut suits fast capture, while synchronization suits retrieval on another device. Neither changes the permanent-delete rule, the simple formatting model, or the need to reopen closed notes from the central list.
