Overview

StreamFab Metadata Editor organizes local movie and television files by matching them with online title records, editing covers and fields, renaming files, and writing information for media-library software. It handles MKV and MP4 material and can export NFO sidecars that servers and players use. StreamFab Metadata Editor changes identification and organization around a video. It does not improve picture quality or verify the user’s right to keep a downloaded title.

Title matching

Movie searches use TMDB data, while television searches can use TMDB or TVDB according to the selected path. A filename supplies clues, but remakes, regional titles and episodes with similar names can produce several candidates. Check the release year, season, episode number and artwork before saving.

An incorrect match can write another title’s cast, synopsis, date and cover into the local file or sidecar. Batch matching increases that mistake across a folder. A small reviewed group is safer than approving a complete library from filenames alone.

Files and sidecars

StreamFab Metadata Editor can write supported metadata into MKV or MP4 files and create NFO files for media servers. Embedded fields travel with the video, while an NFO remains a separate file whose name and folder placement affect whether a server reads it.

Replacing an existing NFO can remove hand-written plot text, tags or sort names. Back up the original sidecar before a batch save. Media servers also interpret some fields differently, so one NFO style may not produce identical results in every library.

Names and folders

Rename and directory organization rules can make a library predictable by placing shows, seasons and episodes under consistent names. They also change file paths. Playlists, subtitle references, download histories and other applications can keep the old path and stop locating the video.

Review the proposed name and destination for illegal characters, duplicate episode names and multi-part titles. Two files that resolve to the same output name need manual separation before the move runs.

Covers and batch work

Cover editing can replace automatically selected artwork with another image. The chosen aspect ratio should match the media server’s poster or backdrop slot. A portrait poster slot can crop a wide backdrop beyond recognition.

Batch save applies approved metadata to many files. Network drives and WSL paths have different permissions and naming behaviour from an ordinary local folder. A successful read does not guarantee that StreamFab Metadata Editor can rename or write sidecars there. A one-file write test should precede the full batch.

Monitoring and updates

A monitored folder can add new StreamFab downloads or user-selected directories to the metadata workflow. Do not point it at a broad archive where StreamFab Metadata Editor may rename unrelated recordings automatically. Another process may still use a new file when the monitor first detects it.

Online identification depends on network access and the availability of the selected metadata service. Existing saved metadata remains local, but a new match can fail or return a limited record while the service is unavailable. Treat StreamFab Metadata Editor results as editable proposals until the user confirms the title, episode and destination.
