System Mechanic
Description
iolo Technologies built System Mechanic around a premise that Windows users see frequently: a PC that runs much slower than when new, accumulates errors over time, and gets filled with junk data from normal use. The software works to address those conditions with a suite of tools that range from junk file removal, registry repair, startup optimization, drive defragmentation, privacy cleaning, and real-time performance monitoring — all in one subscription that iolo has updated continuously since the product’s launch in 1998.
System Mechanic is competing in the PC optimization category with CCleaner, Advanced SystemCare, and similar utilities. Its differentiator has been depth of repair tools and the ActiveCare engine, which performs optimization tasks automatically in the background during system idle periods rather than requiring the user to manually initiate scans.
FEATURES
PC Scan and Problem Detection
The main scan examines the system in several problem categories at once: junk files in temporary directories, browser caches, and Windows components; registry errors such as broken references, orphaned entries, and corrupted values left by incomplete uninstallations; startup programs that load when the system starts and slow down the startup process; network settings that may slow down connection speed; and drive fragmentation. The results of the scan include a list of each issue detected by category with a number of occurrences and description, and a single repair action fixes all issues detected at once or the user fixes each category of issues separately.
Junk File Removal
The junk file cleaner clears temporary files from Windows components, application caches, browser history and cache files, download leftovers, Windows Update cleanup files, and thumbnail caches. iolo’s PC Health Engine calculates the total size of removable junk and shows it before removal. The removal categories are configurable — users who want to keep browser history don’t remove it from the clean, but remove other categories.
Registry Tuner
The registry tool looks for invalid entries: references to files and paths that no longer exist, empty registry keys, broken application references, and obsolete entries from uninstalled software. Detected entries show with descriptions of what each type of error represents. The repair deletes or fixes the entries and a registry backup creates a backup of the current state before changes so that the repair is reversible in case an application breaks after the clean.
Startup Manager
The startup manager presents a list of all programs, services, and scheduled tasks that are loaded when Windows is started, along with the name of the item’s publisher, its file path, and iolo’s recommendation on whether the item is necessary. Users turn individual startup items on and off from the manager. Startup delay settings are used to stagger the load order of startup programs to minimize the performance impact of multiple programs initializing at the same time after login.
LiveBoost Real Time Optimization
LiveBoost runs in the background all the time and manages the system resources in real time. The RAMJet component recovers memory that applications have allocated but are not actively using, and returns it to the available pool. The CPU Optimization component dynamically adjusts the priorities of processes based on the applications that the user is currently using. The Internet Speed Optimization component optimizes TCP/IP settings for network throughput. These adjustments occur automatically without any user action.
ActiveCare Automated Maintenance
ActiveCare monitors system health and performs maintenance tasks — junk removal, registry repair, defragmentation — automatically when the system is idle and plugged in. Users set the sensitivity level for when ActiveCare triggers. Completed maintenance sessions record in the history what was cleaned, and when. ActiveCare performs routine maintenance without the user having to remember to manually run scans.
Privacy Cleaner
The privacy cleaner clears browser history, cookies, form data, saved passwords and download history from installed browsers. Windows activity logs — recent documents list, run history, clipboard contents — clear through the same interface Scheduled privacy cleaning runs on a defined frequency automatically.
Drive Accelerator
The drive accelerator is used to defragment traditional hard drives by reorganizing fragmented files for better read performance on spinning-platter hard drives. The tool detects highly fragmented files and prioritizes them for defragmentation. It does not defragment solid-state drives, which do not benefit from defragmentation and can suffer from unnecessary write cycles as a result of the defragmentation process.
