WindowBlinds changes the visual skin that Windows applies to compatible window frames, title bars, controls and taskbar elements. A skin is a coordinated set of images, colors and layout instructions rather than a desktop wallpaper. Applying one changes the surrounding interface of many programs at once; it does not redesign the documents, websites or custom canvases inside those programs. WindowBlinds also keeps a library of installed skins and their substyles, so one design can have alternate color or control arrangements.
Apply is explicit
Selecting a skin in the configuration window previews it and exposes any available substyles. The Apply action sends that choice to open windows and to compatible windows opened later. Simply closing the configuration window does not apply the selected skin, and it does not unload WindowBlinds. Choosing the Windows Classic entry is the documented way to unload the active skinning layer.
This distinction prevents a preview click from immediately changing the whole desktop, but it can also make a new choice appear broken when the user closes the window before pressing Apply. Some open programs may need their windows recreated before every element picks up the new skin.
Skins have parts
A WindowBlinds skin can define title bars, borders, push buttons, scroll bars and other compatible controls. Color settings can alter parts of the active skin, while a recovery action restores the saved original colors. Substyles let the same package carry another arrangement without becoming a separate skin entry.
Installed skin archives add material to the local collection. WindowBlinds can use skins made outside Stardock, so the appearance and coverage depend on what the author included. One package may alter most visible controls, while another concentrates on frames and leaves several Windows elements close to their standard appearance.
Apps may need exclusion
Some programs draw their own title bars and controls instead of using the ordinary Windows components that WindowBlinds expects. Those windows can show misplaced buttons, unreadable colors or incomplete frames. Per-application rules let the user exclude the program’s executable or assign another skin to it.
The executable is the important identity in this rule. A renamed launcher, a second edition installed under another executable, or a helper window can escape a rule written for the first file. WindowBlinds maintenance notes have repeatedly added compatibility exclusions and fixes for programs with custom interfaces, so a problem limited to one program is better handled with a per-app rule than by discarding the desktop skin immediately.
Start needs Start11
WindowBlinds can skin compatible taskbar and window elements, but the modern Start menu has a separate requirement. Stardock ties Start menu skinning to Start11. Installing WindowBlinds alone therefore does not guarantee that the Start menu will match the selected design. The desktop can show a skinned taskbar and window frames beside an unchanged Start menu until that separate component is present and configured.
Updates touch the shell
WindowBlinds works close to the Windows shell, and some of its files remain locked while the desktop session runs. The official update path can require uninstalling the existing copy, restarting Windows, and then installing the replacement. Skipping the restart may leave old files loaded even when the installer writes newer files to disk.
That update sequence temporarily returns affected interface elements to their normal Windows appearance. Saving or noting the chosen skin and per-app exclusions before a major reinstall makes it easier to confirm that the same rules returned afterward. The restart is part of releasing shell components, not merely a cosmetic request from the installer.
