Overview

TechSmith Camtasia records a computer screen and turns the recording into an editable video project. It can capture a chosen display area with camera, microphone, and system audio, then arrange those streams with imported clips, images, annotations, captions, and cursor changes on a timeline. Unlike a basic screen recorder that immediately saves one finished movie, TechSmith Camtasia keeps the recording and editing decisions separate until export.

Set the capture

TechSmith Camtasia Recorder can capture a whole display, a dragged rectangle, or an area entered with exact pixel dimensions. Separate toggles control the camera, microphone, and system sound. Check each meter and preview before starting, especially when several microphones or cameras are connected.

A recording contains only the sources enabled at capture time. The editor can remove a noisy microphone track or reposition a camera stream, but it cannot reconstruct speech or a webcam image that Recorder never captured. A short rehearsal also catches notifications, hidden windows, and an incorrect display selection before a long demonstration begins.

Choose the track layout

After capture, Rev Media can keep the screen, camera, and audio inside one coordinated package. Its Modify control changes the layout and visual treatment together. Unpacked Media places the streams on separate timeline tracks and exposes more individual timing and placement control.

The choice affects later editing. Rev Media reduces timeline clutter, while unpacked tracks make it easier to replace a camera section or adjust one audio source. Splitting Rev Media creates separate sections that can use different layouts, but it also adds boundaries that need checking for visual jumps.

Protect source media

TechSmith Camtasia saves recordings as TREC media and stores edit decisions in a TSCPROJ project. Media imported into the Media Bin can remain referenced at its original location. Moving or renaming that source later can leave the project unable to find it.

Saving a standalone project gathers the needed media with the project for transfer or archiving. TechSmith recommends active editing and export on a local drive. Network and cloud-synchronized folders can cause delayed playback, missing references, failed saves, or synchronization conflicts, so use them for transfer after closing the project rather than as the working location.

Edit on the timeline

The timeline determines what appears and when. Cutting closes a time range, splitting creates independent clip edges, and moving media changes its relationship to narration and annotations. Cursor paths and clicks can receive visual treatment after capture, which is useful when the original pointer moved unevenly.

High-resolution or long source clips can make timeline playback stutter. A proxy creates a lower-resolution editing copy while retaining the original for final export. The canvas may look soft while the proxy is active; that softness does not describe the finished file.

Export the result

TechSmith Camtasia export turns the timeline into a delivery file or sends it to a supported destination. A timeline selection can produce only one marked section, which is useful for testing a transition or splitting a larger lesson. Exporting a selection by mistake creates a complete file that contains only that range, so clear the selection before the final render.

Captions and interactive material need an output that preserves them. A plain video can display burned-in text, but quizzes and some interactive controls depend on the TechSmith Smart Player. Verify the selected export route on the device or learning system that will actually play the result.
