WinToUSB is a Windows utility that creates a complete Windows system on an external SSD, hard drive, USB flash drive or Thunderbolt drive. This portable workspace boots from the external device and carries its applications and settings with it. WinToUSB also makes Windows installation media and bootable WinPE drives, which serve different purposes from a portable desktop.

Creating a portable Windows workspace

A new workspace can start with a Windows installation image or a CD/DVD source. WinToUSB reads the source and lists the Windows editions it contains, so the selected edition becomes the system on the destination drive. Supported image types include ISO, WIM, ESD and SWM, alongside virtual disks and system backups.

An installation image provides a Windows setup source; a VHD or VHDX can contain an existing Windows installation, while a DBI file supplies a system backup created with Hasleo Backup Suite. VHDX and DBI source support requires a paid WinToUSB edition.

Boot layout

WinToUSB offers partition layouts for BIOS, UEFI or both firmware types. That choice determines which computers can boot the finished drive. A manually prepared partition layout can also be retained, and the paid editions provide controls for moving and resizing partitions.

The workspace can use a conventional installation layout or a VHD-based layout that holds Windows in a virtual disk file. VHDX-based workspaces require a paid edition. Additional driver injection lets the prepared system receive drivers from a chosen folder, although that control is unavailable when the target Windows release is newer than the Windows system running WinToUSB.

Another option keeps a computer’s internal disks offline when portable Windows starts. This leaves those disks inaccessible until they are brought online manually, allowing the external workspace to operate without automatically exposing the host’s internal volumes.

Cloning the running Windows system

The paid editions can use the currently running Windows system as the source. This transfers an existing working environment, including its installed applications, to an external drive instead of building a fresh workspace from installation media. Some cloning operations finish after a restart into a WinPE environment.

Delta Clone maintains an external copy after the first full clone. It copies changed data blocks from the host system, such as changes following an application installation or a Windows update, to the earlier clone. The destination must already contain a clone of that source system.

BitLocker encryption

WinToUSB Professional and Enterprise can encrypt the portable Windows drive with BitLocker during creation. The controls include a password, encryption mode and encryption strength. Encryption finishes as part of the initial startup process, so the first boot includes work beyond starting Windows.

Installation media

The Windows installation USB function turns an ISO or CD/DVD source into bootable setup media for installing Windows on a computer. Its output launches Windows Setup, whereas a Windows To Go drive runs the external workspace itself. A built-in downloader can obtain Windows installation ISOs from Microsoft, with Windows version and language selections.

Setup customization includes specifying a local account name and carrying over the current user’s time zone and regional settings. WinToUSB also offers Windows 11 hardware and online-account bypass options. Selecting a layout that supports both BIOS and UEFI lets the same installation drive serve either firmware type.

WinPE media

WinToUSB can transfer an existing WinPE ISO to a bootable USB drive. WinPE is a small Windows environment used for maintenance, backup and recovery; the available tools come from the chosen image. BIOS-only, UEFI-only and combined boot layouts determine where that rescue media can start.
