WonderFox HD Video Converter Factory Pro is a Windows application that converts video and audio between formats. It also includes tools for downloading, screen recording, basic editing, compression and GIF creation. The converter is sold commercially and can be tried first. Unregistered copies limit converted output to five minutes per file, allow only a few downloads and HD recordings, and watermark the result. A purchased license removes these limits.
The main window opens on separate modules: Converter, Downloader, Recorder, GIF Maker and Toolbox. Users can later add a file from another module, such as a recording or a download, to the Converter.
Choosing an output format
In the Converter, files arrive through Add Files, Add Video Folder or drag and drop. The output format sits on the right side of the window; clicking it opens a profile menu grouped by category. Container formats include MP4, MKV, MOV, AVI, WMV, MPG and TS/M2TS. Codecs include H.264, HEVC, AV1, VP9, ProRes, DivX and Xvid. Audio outputs include MP3, WAV, FLAC, AAC, AC3, DTS and ALAC. Device presets target phones, tablets and media players from Apple, Samsung, Huawei, Sony and others.
For anyone who wants manual control, the parameter settings cover resolution, bitrate, frame rate, sample rate, channels and volume. They also offer a choice of H.264 or H.265 encoding for MP4. Smart Fit takes the opposite approach and fills in settings based on the source file and the chosen format. HD Video Converter Factory Pro can also extract the soundtrack from a video, convert variable frame rate footage to constant frame rate, boost quiet audio and produce 5.1 or 7.1 surround output.
Resolution changes
Output resolution can go up or down, from 480p through 1080p and 4K to 8K and beyond. Downscaling suits older devices. When upscaling SD or 720p material to a higher resolution, the program applies sharpening and picture-enhancement processing. This processing aims to reduce the softness that plain enlargement causes.
How conversion speed is handled
Two icons on each queued file show how WonderFox will process it. A GPU icon means the graphics card handles encoding through NVIDIA NVENC/CUDA or Intel Quick Sync, mainly for H.264, HEVC and AV1. This works alongside multi-core CPU use. A lightning icon means the source streams already fit the target. The program therefore only changes the container instead of re-encoding, which is fast and leaves picture quality untouched. Batch mode processes up to ten files at a time. The user sets the output folder at the bottom of the window before pressing Run.
Compression options
File size can be reduced in two ways. Lossy compression lowers bitrate or resolution. The lossless route switches to a more efficient codec, such as moving from H.264 to HEVC, or trims away parts of the video that are not needed.
Editing tools in the Converter
Before conversion, users can edit imported files with these tools:
- Trim and split cut out one or more segments or divide a long file into parts.
- Crop removes black bars or unwanted areas of the frame.
- Rotate and flip fix sideways or mirrored footage.
- Merge joins several files into one; when their parameters match, the join happens without re-encoding.
- Effects apply filters such as Old Film, Mosaic, Vintage or white balance.
- Watermark places text or an image, such as a logo, over the video.
Users can add several soft subtitle tracks to MKV, MP4 or MOV so the viewer can switch them on and off. They can also burn subtitles into the picture permanently or remove existing tracks.
Downloading from video sites
The Downloader accepts a link from YouTube, Vimeo, Facebook, Dailymotion, SoundCloud and many other sites. After clicking New Download, the user pastes the URL and clicks Analyze. The program then lists the available resolutions, audio tracks and subtitles to choose from. A channel or playlist link produces a list of entries. Download All saves them one after another, with up to five items downloading at once. WonderFox presents this mainly as a way to back up videos one has uploaded oneself and asks users not to download copyrighted videos. Users can then add saved files to the Converter.
Screen and audio recording
The Recorder captures a custom area or the full screen, has a game mode at 60 fps, and can record audio alone. The Recorder can capture system sound and the microphone together or separately. The Recorder saves recordings as MP4, AVI, MOV or MKV video, or as MP3, WAV, AAC or AC3 audio.
GIF Maker and Toolbox
The GIF Maker turns a section of a video into an animated GIF with adjustable size, frame rate and quality. It can also assemble a GIF from a set of PNG, JPG, BMP or TIFF images. The Toolbox holds smaller utilities, including a subtitle extractor that exports tracks as SRT, ASS, SSA or TXT and a ringtone maker. Its split-screen tool plays two or three videos side by side in one frame. Its image-to-video converter builds a clip from still photos.
