Overview

XnView MP is an image viewer and photo organizer for Windows, macOS and Linux. It opens more than 500 image formats, browses folders as thumbnails, edits metadata, makes basic corrections and converts or renames files in batches. XnView MP is free for private, educational, public-service and non-profit use; use inside a company requires a paid license. It replaces the Windows-only XnView Classic and adds Unicode support, XMP editing and formats such as HEIC and JPEG XL.

A browser built around folders

XnView MP centers on a file browser rather than a single-image window. A folder tree leads to a thumbnail view with an adjustable size and a persistent thumbnail cache for large folders. Users can sort and filter files by name, date or metadata. Opening an image switches to the viewer, which has a full-screen mode and a filmstrip view for reviewing a shoot photo by photo.

The compare view places up to four images side by side and pans and zooms them together. Slideshows use transition effects and can be saved as sessions with their intervals and per-image timings.

Formats the viewer reads and writes

Besides JPEG, PNG, GIF, TIFF and WebP, XnView MP reads AVIF, iPhone HEIC/HEIF, JPEG XL, Photoshop PSD, JPEG 2000 and OpenEXR. Multipage TIFF files and animated GIF, PNG and AVIF files open in the viewer. HEIC, WebP and AVIF display without a separate codec download.

Camera RAW support covers Canon CR2 and CR3, Nikon NEF, Sony ARW, Adobe DNG and many other RAW types. XnView MP also opens DICOM medical images, including multi-frame series. PDF, PostScript, EPS and AI files need Ghostscript installed before they can be viewed. On the output side, the program writes around 70 formats, including JPEG, TIFF, PNG, WebP and AVIF.

Videos such as MP4, MOV, MKV and WebM play inside the program. Color management uses embedded profiles and defaults to sRGB, with Adobe RGB and custom ICC profiles available.

Catalog, categories and ratings

An optional SQLite catalog indexes the folders the user chooses. It stores thumbnails, EXIF, IPTC and XMP metadata, star ratings and color labels, for searching without reopening files. The search panel filters by keyword, rating, date, camera or any metadata field.

Categories work as a tree of user-defined tags, and one image can sit in several categories at once. Users can export category assignments as XMP keywords. Hierarchical keywords appear as a tree. XnView MP exchanges ratings, color labels and keywords with Adobe Lightroom and Bridge through XMP sidecar files. A map panel shows geotagged photos as pins. Users can manually place images without GPS data on the map.

Editing IPTC, XMP and EXIF data

XnView MP reads EXIF, IPTC and XMP metadata and provides editors for IPTC and XMP fields such as captions, keywords and credits. A clean-up function removes EXIF, IPTC or XMP blocks, or the embedded thumbnail, before files are shared. Users can change file timestamps in batch.

Corrections and lossless JPEG changes

The editing tools cover resizing, rotating and cropping; brightness, contrast and gamma; auto levels and auto contrast; color depth and palette changes; and a set of filters and effects. Paint tools add lines, circles, arrows, speech bubbles and watermarks. XnView MP supports Photoshop-compatible filters.

For JPEG files, XnView MP offers lossless rotation and cropping. These operations rearrange the existing compressed data instead of decoding and re-saving the image. This prevents another round of compression from reducing quality.

Batch conversion and renaming

The batch converter in XnView MP shares its engine with XnConvert. Files or whole folders go into an input list. Optional actions such as resize, crop, rotate, adjustments, and image or text watermarks run on each file before saving. Pure format conversion needs no action at all.

The resize action fits images by width, height, longest or shortest side, total megapixels, or a fit or fill box. It keeps the aspect ratio if requested and can skip images that are already smaller or larger than the target. The output stage sets the destination folder, filename pattern, format and format-specific settings such as JPEG quality. Processing can use several CPU cores, and users can save a complete setup as a preset for reuse.

Batch rename builds new filenames from patterns that may include metadata placeholders, such as the EXIF capture date. This lets users rename a shoot by when each photo was taken.

Duplicates, contact sheets and other tools

The Find Similar tool looks for duplicate files by name, size, date, binary content or visual similarity. It can find resized or re-saved copies as well as exact matches.

Other tools create contact sheets, video thumbnail galleries, image strips and file listings. The program also handles screen capture, scanning and printing.

Portable use and settings

A portable archive exists for each platform, with settings kept next to the program. Preferences, shortcuts and the catalog live in one settings folder, so copying it moves a configured XnView MP setup to another computer.
