Zorin OS is a Linux operating system for desktop and laptop PCs, built on Ubuntu. It provides a complete desktop for browsing, working with documents, playing media and running applications, with layouts that make the move from Windows or macOS more familiar. The free Core edition includes the main desktop tools; the paid Pro edition adds layouts, bundled applications and installation support.
Desktop layouts
Zorin Appearance changes how the desktop is arranged. Core offers Windows-style, list-based, touch and GNOME Shell layouts, letting users choose a desktop organization that suits their input method and habits. Pro expands this selection with layouts resembling macOS and other desktop environments, as well as a compact panel option.
Software store and package formats
The built-in Software store brings applications from the Zorin OS and Ubuntu repositories, Flathub and the Snap Store into a graphical browsing and search interface. An application’s page shows its description and screenshots before installation.
Applications obtained outside the store can also take different forms. A compatible .deb package installs as a native application, while an AppImage is a self-contained program that runs from the location where its file is saved. For applications supplied through an added APT repository, subsequent releases become available through Software Updater.
Windows compatibility
Zorin OS offers optional Windows App Support for programs supplied as .exe or .msi files. This uses the Wine compatibility layer to run many Windows applications within the Linux environment. Compatibility varies by application, so a familiar desktop layout does not mean every Windows program will run. Native Linux editions and alternatives remain separate options in the Software store.
For games, Steam can run native Linux titles and use Steam Play’s Proton support for compatible Windows titles. Other launchers provide access to additional libraries: Heroic Games Launcher connects to Epic Games and GOG accounts, while Lutris manages games from multiple sources.
Office documents and everyday apps
Zorin OS includes LibreOffice for viewing, creating and editing office documents, including Microsoft Office document formats. Its standard application selection also covers web browsing and music and video playback. When Zorin OS shares a computer with Windows, users can access files on the Windows partition from within the Linux desktop, keeping existing documents within reach.
Desktop accessibility
Zorin OS includes a screen reader, magnifier and click assist. The desktop is also available in multiple languages.
Zorin Connect
Zorin Connect links the desktop with an Android phone over an encrypted connection on the local network. It can synchronize notifications and messages and transfer files or photos between the devices. The connection operates locally rather than routing this exchange through a cloud service.
The phone can also act as an input device for the computer, controlling its mouse and keyboard. Separate controls cover presentation slides, a presentation pointer and media playback.
What Zorin OS Pro adds
Zorin OS Pro bundles additional applications for creative work and productivity. The creative selection covers image editing, illustration, video, audio and animation. Among the productivity tools, Xournal++ combines handwritten or typed notes with PDF and image annotation, and can record microphone audio alongside notes.
Other bundled tools extend work across devices. Deskflow shares a mouse, keyboard and clipboard between computers over an encrypted local connection. Network Displays casts the desktop to compatible Wi-Fi Display or Miracast screens. Core still includes the office suite and Zorin Connect.
Pro is purchased once for its major release series, with later major Pro releases sold separately. Its installation support service provides email assistance for setting up one computer.
