About Freeware
Freeware is software you can download and use at no cost. That is the whole of the promise, and it is worth being precise about what it does not include. Free to use is not the same as open source: the source code of freeware is normally closed, and you cannot study, modify, or redistribute it the way an open licence would allow.
Because the price is zero, a fair question is how the software is funded, and the answers vary. Some freeware is a free edition of a paid product, offered to win users who may later upgrade. Some is supported by advertising shown inside the program. Some is funded by data collection. And some is released free by a developer with no commercial motive at all.
None of those models is automatically a problem, but they are worth noticing. A free edition may hold back features behind a paid tier. An ad-supported program may suggest extras during installation that you can decline. Reading the install screens, rather than clicking through them, is the habit that keeps freeware genuinely free of unwanted additions.
Freeware is the largest licence group on the site, and it covers software of every kind. The licence tells you the cost, not the merit — judge a program on its developer, its version history, and what it actually does for you.
