AdwCleaner is a focused Windows cleanup utility for adware, browser hijackers, potentially unwanted programs, and unwanted software that arrived with a computer or another installer. It scans files, folders, services, processes, browser-related entries, and parts of the registry for known detection patterns. AdwCleaner does not replace continuous antivirus protection: it performs an on-demand inspection and asks the user what to quarantine after the scan.
Scanning does not clean
Scan Now creates a detection list without immediately deleting everything it finds. The list can contain adware alongside software that the computer manufacturer installed. Preinstalled software is not automatically malicious, so its appearance in the results is a decision point rather than proof of infection.
Review the checked items before continuing. A detected browser component may explain redirects or an unwanted home page, while a manufacturer utility may control a function the user still needs. Selecting all results only because the list looks technical can remove a wanted component together with the actual nuisance.
Quarantine comes first
AdwCleaner moves selected items from their original locations into quarantine and makes them inactive. This separation stops the item from running while keeping a recovery path. The quarantine area divides ordinary detected items from preinstalled software, and each entry has separate Restore and Delete actions.
Restore puts an item back when cleanup breaks a program or removes a wanted setting. Delete removes the quarantined copy permanently. Test the affected browser or program before choosing Delete. A successful Windows restart does not prove that every removed integration still works.
Cleanup interrupts work
AdwCleaner asks the user to save work and close applications before cleanup. It may need a Windows restart to finish removing active services or locked files. An unsaved document in another program is outside the quarantine safety net, so the cleanup cannot restore that lost work.
After the restart, AdwCleaner can reopen and show the result. The screen may also expose Basic Repair, but the official workflow warns against running that repair without guidance from a support agent. Basic Repair changes broader Windows settings; it is not the routine final step of every adware scan.
Exclusions need precision
Exclusions tell AdwCleaner to ignore a file, folder, registry key, registry value, service, URL, process, or detection family. A family exclusion needs the exact family name. An element exclusion needs the correct type and content, so a path entered under the wrong element type does not describe the intended exception.
An excluded item will not be scanned or quarantined. This can protect a known business component from repeated detection, but it can also preserve every unwanted item inside an excluded folder. Add the narrowest exception that solves the false detection, and remove an old exception when the related software leaves the computer.
Logs preserve decisions
AdwCleaner writes a text log after each scan and cleanup event. The Log Files tab can sort those records and open them for inspection. A scan log shows what the detection engine found, while a cleanup log records the action that followed.
The logs are useful when a browser changes after cleanup or when another technician needs to understand the earlier decision. They do not contain a copy of every removed file. The restorable content remains in quarantine until the user restores or deletes it, so keeping a log while emptying quarantine does not preserve the same recovery option.
