Ashampoo Photo Commander is a photo browser and editor built around folders rather than an import-only library. It can show thumbnails across one or several selected folders, filter that view by date or location data, edit a picture, and send a selection into batch or creation wizards. It changes image files when the user saves edits, while tags, filters, albums, and previews help organize what appears in the browser.
Filter the folder view
The folder pane determines the working set. Ashampoo Photo Commander can display one folder or combine several checked folders, then narrow the visible files by type, size, creation time, or GPS location. The When view needs at least one selected folder. The Where view depends on location data in the photos; files without coordinates need manual geotagging before they appear under a place.
This filtered view affects later actions. An instant slideshow uses the images currently visible, not every image stored beneath the selected folder. A date or format filter left active can therefore produce a shorter presentation than expected. The same browser can rate files, compare images, inspect metadata, and play video or animation without handing those files to a separate viewer.
Save or export
Double-clicking a thumbnail opens the editor, where Ashampoo Photo Commander handles crop, resize, rotation, color work, red-eye removal, cloning, and local effects. A side-by-side view compares the modified state with the original. The program also creates automatic backups when edits are applied, so the Backups menu can restore an earlier image state.
Save and Export have different consequences. Save overwrites the current image with the edited state. Export writes the image in another format. The automatic backup reduces the risk of an accidental Save, but it should not replace a separate copy of important originals. Backup availability also belongs to this editor’s history; another program will not necessarily understand it.
Build a batch
Batch Process collects selected files, orders a list of operations, previews the settings, and writes converted results to an output folder. Ashampoo Photo Commander can resize, watermark, adjust color, and change format in one run. Operation order matters because each step receives the result of the previous step. A resize followed by sharpening does not produce the same pixels as sharpening the large source and resizing afterward.
The file-handling page can keep the source files or delete them after conversion. Automatic deletion is the destructive choice in an otherwise copy-oriented workflow. A first run should use a separate destination and preserve the originals until the output count, dimensions, format, and image quality have been checked.
Batch Rename uses placeholder characters to combine counters, the original name, and date data. Its preview table shows the names before the change. Ashampoo Photo Commander can also remove or replace text inside the existing names. A pattern that omits the original-name placeholder can erase meaningful filenames across the whole selection, so the preview deserves a scan for duplicate or empty results.
Create from photos
Separate wizards turn a selection into a collage, calendar, contact sheet, panorama, PDF, HTML album, or slideshow. The slideshow builder can write a playable video or prepare a disc for a compatible player. Resolution, display duration, and scaling determine how still images fill the frame. Enlarging small photos removes borders but can expose softness; retaining original size preserves detail and may leave empty margins.
Duplicate search compares a chosen image with a folder or scans a folder automatically. Ashampoo Photo Commander lists the results and can move or delete selected copies. Similar-looking photographs are not always redundant files, so the visual comparison should come before deletion.
