Auslogics Disk Defrag is a Windows utility for analyzing and defragmenting mechanical hard drives. It brings scattered parts of files together and can consolidate unused disk space, changing the layout that the drive reads and writes. The program works with internal and external HDDs; it detects SSDs and directs their maintenance to the separate SSD Optimizer application.
Analysis results on the cluster map
Analyzing a drive shows its fragmentation level alongside an interactive cluster map. The map connects the overall result to the files occupying particular areas: selecting a block reveals its associated files, while the Files tab lists fragmented items in descending order of fragmentation. You can examine those results before deciding whether to process the whole drive or selected content.
During defragmentation, the map shows files being rearranged, with a progress column and a General tab providing information about the running operation. Completed jobs produce reports identifying files that were processed and those that were skipped. These details help explain a result that still contains some fragmented files.
Defragmenting chosen files and folders
Auslogics Disk Defrag can work on a chosen file or folder without reorganizing the entire drive. You can select items from the analysis results, select several files together, or browse directly to the content you want to defragment.
Optional File Explorer integration adds a defragmentation command to the context menu. An Ignore Lists setting works in the opposite direction: adding files or folders excludes them from processing. Defrag priority can also be set to low, normal or high, allowing a background run to receive less priority while other applications are in use.
Free-space consolidation, cleanup and wiping
File defragmentation joins existing file fragments. Free-space consolidation instead brings scattered unused areas together into a continuous block, leaving larger areas available for subsequent writes. Both operations concern the arrangement of disk contents, rather than removing personal files to create additional capacity.
The Free edition provides disk analysis and basic defragmentation. Pro adds special HDD optimization algorithms, cleanup before defragmentation and free-space wiping. Cleanup removes unnecessary data before the rearrangement begins, reducing the material left to process. Wiping addresses remnants of deleted files in unused space.
Pro’s HDD optimization controls
Pro’s HDD optimization controls extend beyond moving file fragments. They expose settings for write caching, Prefetch, paging and other aspects of disk operation. Individual options let you choose which adjustments to apply rather than enabling every change as one fixed package.
For example, Compact OS compresses Windows system files to reduce their storage footprint, while the file-system cache setting changes how much memory is allocated to caching file data. These controls affect how Windows stores or handles data, whereas an ordinary defrag job changes the physical arrangement of file fragments on the HDD.
How Auslogics Disk Defrag schedules maintenance
Automatic maintenance is a Pro feature. Auslogics Disk Defrag can run when the computer is idle or follow a daily, weekly or monthly schedule, with controls for the time and relevant day. You select the target drive, and the scheduled run checks whether fragmentation requires treatment.
Additional conditions can prevent operation on battery power or stop a run when a full-screen application starts. A report option records the completed work.
Disk checks
Both Free and Pro include disk error checking and repair. The check-only command launches Windows CHKDSK for the selected drive, while the check-and-correct command requests repairs as well.
Portable defrag
Auslogics Disk Defrag can create a portable copy in a selected folder on removable storage. That copy can be taken to another Windows computer for manual HDD maintenance without requiring an internet connection there. The portable build omits automatic scheduling and offline defragmentation, so it does not reproduce every function of the installed application.
