Avira Phantom VPN is a virtual private network app from Avira for Windows, macOS, Android and iOS. It encrypts a device’s internet traffic and routes it through an Avira server. Websites and local networks therefore see the server’s IP address instead of the user’s own. Avira Phantom VPN comes in a free version with a monthly data allowance and a paid Pro subscription with unlimited data.
The encrypted tunnel
When the app connects, it builds an encrypted tunnel between the device and a VPN server. AES-256 encryption protects everything sent through that tunnel. The internet provider, the operator of a public hotspot or anyone else on the same network cannot read it.
Phantom VPN also includes DNS leak prevention for both IPv4 and IPv6. Without it, the lookups that translate website names into addresses could still travel outside the tunnel. They could reveal which sites the user visits.
Picking a virtual location
Connecting with Avira Phantom VPN means choosing a virtual location and pressing connect. The server network spans more than 30 countries, including Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Japan, Singapore, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and the United States. Once connected, the device appears to be in the selected country.
That change of location is what lets the VPN reach websites, apps, streaming services and social networks that are restricted by region. Speed through the VPN depends on factors such as the distance to the server and other apps sharing the connection. Peer-to-peer file sharing is allowed.
Automatic protection on Wi-Fi
When the device joins a Wi-Fi network that may be unsafe, the app shows a prompt with two options. The first is to turn on auto-connect, so the VPN starts every time the device uses that network. The second is to mark the network as trusted. Closing the prompt without choosing brings it back on the next connection. Users can also set the list of networks that should trigger an automatic connection ahead of time in the app’s settings.
Kill switch on Windows
The Pro edition for Windows adds a kill switch. If the VPN connection drops unexpectedly, the kill switch cuts the device’s internet access until protection is restored. This keeps traffic from quietly continuing over the unencrypted connection with the real IP address exposed.
How much data the free VPN allows
Both editions of Avira Phantom VPN include data encryption and a virtual IP address. The difference is mainly in how much can be sent through the tunnel.

On Android and iOS, users buy Pro as an in-app subscription. The iOS app offers a short Pro trial before billing begins.
Logging and diagnostic data
Avira runs Phantom VPN under a no-log policy: it does not record which websites users visit and does not sell browsing data. The service does count the amount of traffic each user sends to enforce the free data limit. It also collects diagnostic information such as bug reports. Users can switch off diagnostic collection inside the app.
Availability in India
Avira Phantom VPN is no longer offered for use in India because local rules require VPN providers to log and store user data. Existing subscribers can still use the service when they are outside India.
