BleachBit removes selected caches, logs, histories, temporary files and other stored data that applications no longer need. It can free space and reduce traces left by ordinary computer use, but it does not repair the registry, speed every program or identify malware. BleachBit acts on the cleaner options the user selects, so understanding the difference between cache, cookies, saved sessions and free-space wiping matters before deletion.
Preview comes first
Preview lists the files and estimated space without deleting them. The same browser can have separate cleaners for cache, cookies, history, saved forms and passwords. Removing cache usually causes a later reload; removing cookies can sign the user out; removing saved credentials can create a much larger recovery problem.
BleachBit recommends closing the application whose data it will clean. A running browser or mail client can keep files open or write fresh data while cleaning proceeds. Closing it also makes the preview closer to the final deletion set.
Cleaners are specific
Each cleaner targets paths and settings associated with one application or system area. A large estimated total does not mean every item is useless. Thumbnail caches, recent-file lists and update remnants may rebuild later, shifting the time cost rather than eliminating it.
A whitelist protects named files or folders from both preview and cleaning. It is useful when a general cleaner includes one cache or workspace that the user wants to preserve. The whitelist needs testing with Preview; a misspelled path gives no protection.
Overwriting costs time
Ordinary deletion removes file-system references and leaves some content recoverable until new data replaces it. BleachBit can overwrite selected files before deletion. That extra writing takes longer and increases storage activity, especially across many small files.
Modern solid-state storage uses wear leveling, so software cannot always guarantee that an overwrite reaches every physical cell that held the old data. Encryption established before sensitive data is written addresses a different layer of risk. BleachBit should not be described as a universal proof of destruction.
Free space stays free
Wiping empty space writes across currently unused areas to reduce recovery of files deleted earlier. It does not increase the amount of free space when it finishes. The process can take a long time and may temporarily consume nearly all free capacity while it writes.
BleachBit needs a writable location on each partition the user intends to wipe. Running the operation casually on an SSD creates extensive writes for limited certainty. It makes more sense before disposing of unencrypted media than as a routine daily cleaner.
Expert mode removes guards
Expert mode exposes protected cleaning options and can relax confirmation behavior. Deep scan searches broadly for temporary and backup files, which makes it slower and more likely to include material worth keeping. Some protected options reset desktop icons, recent-document pins or application-specific settings.
Turning expert mode on does not make its results more correct. BleachBit recommends testing one protected option at a time and reviewing the warning. A backup matters when the consequence cannot be reversed.
Automation needs restraint
The command-line path can automate the same cleaners for scheduled work. Automation repeats mistakes as reliably as correct choices. A preset should begin with Preview, explicit exclusions and a log before it becomes an unattended clean.
BleachBit gives precise control when the user selects a narrow target. Choosing every box because the total looks impressive can trade browser sessions, troubleshooting logs and recovery data for space that applications soon recreate.
