Boom 2 changes the audio that a Mac sends to its speakers, headphones, or another selected output. It combines a system-wide volume booster with an equalizer and audio effects. The processing can affect music, browser video, calls, and other applications that use the normal system audio path. Boom 2 also has a separate File Boost operation for raising the stored level of audio files.
The program sits between applications and the output device. That position explains both its broad reach and its setup requirements. The application window alone cannot intercept every sound; system-wide processing needs the Boom audio component and the permissions that let macOS load it.
Install the audio path
The optional audio component creates the path used for volume boost, equalization, and effects. Some macOS releases block a new third-party system extension until the user approves it in Security and Privacy. Closing the alert without approving the extension can leave Boom 2 open while the sound remains unchanged.
macOS may also describe the required audio-input permission as microphone access. The vendor states that Boom 2 does not listen to the physical microphone; it needs the audio-input role to receive system sound for processing. Denying that permission prevents the same processing the user installed it to perform.
Set the equalizer
The equalizer has 31-band and 10-band views. Each band controls a part of the frequency range, while presets provide saved starting points. A custom preset can compensate for small speakers or reduce a harsh range, but it cannot restore information that the recording or output device never contained.
Large positive changes across several bands add gain before the main volume boost. Combining both can exceed the available headroom and cause audible distortion. Reducing the boost or pulling down raised bands is often more effective than raising another control to hide the clipping.
Choose an effect
Ambience adds reflected-space character. Fidelity raises weaker frequency areas, while Spatial widens the apparent placement of stereo sound. Night Mode reduces loud peaks and raises quieter material. Pitch moves musical pitch for practice or matching an instrument.
These effects change the same signal and can be combined. More processing is not automatically clearer. Night Mode and a strong volume boost can work against each other, and wide spatial settings can weaken a centered voice. One effect at a time makes the result easier to judge.
Boost files separately
File Boost works on selected audio files instead of the live system stream. It can process one file or a batch and permanently raise their stored playback level. This is useful when the files will play on a phone or another device that does not run Boom 2.
Permanent processing needs an untouched source copy. A file that already clips cannot be repaired by making it louder, and repeated boosting can reduce headroom again. The processed files should be written to a separate folder and compared at matched listening volume before replacing an archive.
Check the output
Sound can disappear when macOS selects the Boom device or another third-party driver as the output after sleep, restart, or installation. The fix may require choosing the intended speakers or headphones again in the system sound settings. Audio tools that install their own drivers can compete for the same route.
An application can also bypass the normal system path or use an incompatible audio mode. If only one application ignores Boom 2, changing the global equalizer is unlikely to solve it. Comparing that application with a browser or local player helps separate an app-specific route from a failed Boom component.
Keep gain controlled
Boom 2 can make quiet hardware easier to hear, but extra level does not increase the safe capacity of the speaker or headphones. Sustained high output can distort small speakers and can expose the listener to unsafe volume. The boost should be set while the loudest part of the material is playing, not during a quiet introduction.
A stable setup has three parts: a loaded audio component, the correct macOS output, and enough headroom in the equalizer. Once those are confirmed, presets can hold different choices for speech, music, and night listening without rebuilding the signal path each time.
