Corel Painter is a digital painting studio for building an image with simulated art media. The artist works on a canvas or a stack of layers with pencils, oils, chalk, watercolor, airbrushes, and palette knives. Corel Painter changes the pixels and paint state inside its document; it does not merely place a color filter over a photograph. This separates it from a general photo editor, where correction and compositing usually matter more than the behavior of a wet brush or textured paper.
Brushes are systems
A brush variant combines several decisions. Its category sets the broad medium, while its controls determine size, opacity, grain response, spacing, and how new color mixes with existing color. The selected paper texture can change the same stroke because some brushes reveal the raised and recessed parts of that texture.
This depth makes a brush name only the starting point. Two marks from the same variant can differ after a change to pressure response or paper grain. Save a custom variant before extensive control changes if the original behavior still matters. Corel Painter can restore a default brush, but that reset also removes the adjustments that produced a useful personal stroke.
Stylus data matters
A compatible stylus can send pressure, tilt, bearing, and rotation information. Corel Painter maps that information to brush behavior, so pressing harder can enlarge a stroke while tilting the pen can expose the side of a pencil or alter an airbrush. A mouse still paints, but it cannot send the same physical range.
Brush Tracking calibrates response to the artist’s hand. A light-handed user and a heavy-handed user should not expect one calibration to feel identical. Recalibrate after changing the stylus or when pressure reaches full size too early. Otherwise a brush may appear badly designed when the real mismatch sits in the input curve.
Canvas is different
The canvas is the permanent bottom surface of a Corel Painter document. It cannot move above another layer, join a layer group, or become transparent. Ordinary pixel layers sit above it and can move, transform, group, or change opacity. Painting directly on the canvas therefore commits the mark to a less flexible surface.
Use a standard layer when later repositioning or masking may matter. The native document format retains the layer structure, while a flattened export does not preserve that editing arrangement. Saving only the delivery image can leave no practical route back to separate paint elements.
Media chooses layers
Some media have their own layer types. Watercolor belongs on a Watercolor layer, and Liquid Ink belongs on a Liquid Ink layer. Thick Paint also keeps information that a normal pixel layer does not store. Corel Painter can warn when the chosen brush and active layer do not match.
Other objects create another boundary. Shape, dynamic, and reference layers need conversion to a standard layer before ordinary pixel painting. That conversion gives up the original object’s special editing behavior. Check which kind of layer is active before making a long stroke, because the correct brush can still produce an unexpected result on the wrong surface.
Cloning rebuilds photos
Cloning links brush marks to a source image. Tracing paper can show the source beneath the clone document, while a cloner brush samples its color and structure. The artist can follow the photograph closely or use different media to rebuild it as a painting.
A layered source does not pass its editable layer stack into the clone document. Corel Painter uses a composited copy, so hidden construction and separate source adjustments no longer remain separate there. Changing to another brush can also switch Clone Color off. If strokes suddenly use the current palette color, turn Clone Color back on before continuing.
Complex strokes can lag
Some detailed variants require more calculation than the pointer can display immediately. Corel Painter may show a dotted path while it finishes the rendered stroke. The mark is not lost, but a rapid second stroke can make control feel less direct. A simpler variant, smaller brush size, or shorter stroke reduces the workload when immediate feedback matters more than the full simulation.
