Overview

Disk Drill searches storage devices and disk images for files or partitions that the operating system no longer lists normally. It can read surviving filesystem records, locate lost partition structures, or identify file contents by known signatures when names and folders are gone. Disk Drill copies recoverable data to another location; it does not repair the deleted file in place or make an overwritten block reappear. The safest workflow begins by stopping writes to the affected device.

Stop using the source

Deleting a file usually removes its filesystem reference before every data block disappears. New downloads, updates, browser caches and normal system activity can reuse those blocks. Installing Disk Drill on the same drive after deletion can overwrite part of the item being sought. A system drive is especially active because logs, indexing, swap data and background services continue writing.

The recovery destination must be another physical drive. Restoring onto the source consumes free blocks and can damage files that remain recoverable later in the scan. A second partition on the same physical disk does not remove that risk. Disk Drill therefore separates the device being scanned from the location receiving recovered files.

Image before scanning

A Byte-to-Byte Backup copies readable sectors into an uncompressed disk image. Disk Drill can scan that image repeatedly while the original device stays disconnected or idle. This matters when a drive has bad sectors, disconnects under load or makes unusual mechanical sounds. Repeated deep scans against failing hardware create more reading and may reduce the time available before failure.

The image requires substantial free space because it represents sectors rather than only visible documents. A nearly full destination can stop the copy before the source is captured. Bad sectors may still leave gaps, so imaging preserves the readable state rather than guaranteeing a perfect duplicate.

Methods return different names

Disk Drill uses several recovery paths. Existing-filesystem allocation reads intact metadata when the operating system cannot mount or browse the volume normally. Lost Partition Search looks for partition and filesystem structures. Signature scanning recognizes file content without depending on the original directory record.

When metadata survives, results can retain names and folder paths. Signature recovery often assigns generated names and groups files by type because the old directory information is missing. Previewing a result checks whether its content opens before recovery. A familiar filename alone does not prove that every block belongs to the original file, especially after partial overwrite.

TRIM changes the odds

Modern SSDs use TRIM to tell the device that deleted blocks no longer need their previous contents. Once the controller clears or stops exposing those blocks, Disk Drill cannot recover their earlier bytes. Recovery Vault does not defeat TRIM because it records metadata rather than another copy of the file.

TRIM can act soon after deletion, and continued computer use narrows the opportunity further. A scan that lists a filename may still preview an empty or damaged file if its content blocks have been trimmed. No scan mode can reconstruct data that the device returns as zeroes.

Vault works beforehand

Recovery Vault on Windows monitors selected accessible partitions and records file names, locations and related metadata before deletion. It supports common Windows filesystems when the partition has read and write access. If protection was not active for that location before the loss, the protected-data recovery command has no prior record to use.

Disk Drill keeps the Vault database with the protected storage according to the drive type and setup. The database improves identification and folder reconstruction, but later writes can still overwrite the actual file. Recovery Vault is therefore a preparation aid, not a backup of the protected folders.
