EdrawMax is a diagram editor for building flowcharts, organization charts, network maps, floor plans, mind maps, technical schematics, and other drawings made from connected symbols. A document can contain several pages, layers, text, shape data, images, and reusable symbol libraries. EdrawMax changes diagram objects and their relationships. It does not calculate an engineering design merely because the canvas contains electrical or architectural symbols.
Choose the diagram
The home page can open a blank document for a selected diagram type or create one from a template. The choice affects the available symbol libraries and starting layout, but it does not lock the page to that category. A template is editable content rather than a form that guarantees correct data.
Replacing sample labels and colors is only the first step. A process template may contain branches that do not match the real workflow, while a floor-plan symbol can look precise without carrying verified dimensions. Remove unused sample objects and check the diagram against the information it is meant to communicate.
Symbols need connections
Dragging a symbol onto the canvas creates an independent object with position, size, text, and formatting. Connectors represent relationships between objects. When a connector is glued to a connection point, it can follow the symbol as the layout changes. A line that merely touches the edge may stay behind when the symbol moves.
Grouping several shapes makes them easier to move together, but grouping does not create a logical connector. The distinction matters in large flowcharts: a visually attached arrow can become detached after alignment or automatic layout. Move a few nodes before final export and watch which lines continue to follow them.
Pages and layers
One EdrawMax document can hold several pages, which is useful for a system overview and its detailed sections. Layers control whether related objects are visible, printable, or locked on a page. A locked layer prevents accidental selection; it does not protect the document from someone who can remove the lock.
Backgrounds, title blocks, and repeated reference material belong on a separate layer when they should not move with ordinary editing. Hiding a layer before export also removes its visible content from that output. Review layer visibility on every page instead of checking only the active canvas.
Imports need cleanup
EdrawMax can import Visio documents and SVG graphics. Import translates objects into structures EdrawMax can display and edit, but fonts, connector routes, custom stencils, and special effects may not map exactly. A file that opens successfully can still have shifted labels or changed line endings.
Keep the source file until the converted document has been compared page by page. Imported diagrams often need font substitution and connector repair before further editing. Saving the imported result only in the native Edraw format can also make it harder to return to the original application.
Exports are copies
EdrawMax exports to images, PDF, Office documents, HTML, SVG, and Visio formats. A bitmap image fixes the diagram as pixels, while SVG preserves vector geometry. Office and Visio exports attempt to create editable objects, but the destination program can lay out text and connectors differently.
Choose the format according to the next action. PDF is suitable for fixed review, while an editable exchange format is needed when another person must change shapes. Open the exported file in its destination program and inspect page size, font wrapping, transparency, hyperlinks, and connector placement before sending it.
Sharing uses a copy
The sharing command can generate a web link and QR code for a cloud document. Share management can set expiration or cancel access. The link points to the online copy, so saving a different local file does not necessarily update what recipients see.
Check whether recipients have viewing or editing permission before distributing the link. Editing access can change the shared document, while a cancelled link can break an embedded diagram on another website. Export a dated file when an unchanging record matters more than live collaboration.
Save beyond recovery
EdrawMax can save documents locally or in cloud storage and can recover some interrupted work. Recovery is not a replacement for deliberate saving because it may not contain the latest actions or may depend on data kept on the same device.
Use distinct filenames before major imports, automatic layouts, or bulk formatting. A document with many pages and custom symbols also needs its external images and fonts considered when moving to another computer. The native file preserves editing better than a screenshot, but it still needs a backup outside the only working location.
