EF Commander is a Windows file manager that combines folder navigation with archive handling, remote file transfers and built-in viewing and editing tools. Its tabbed folder panes let you work with several locations, while operations such as batch renaming, checksum verification and file splitting act on the files you manage there.
Working across several locations
Each pane has tabs for its folder views, so you can retain several working locations within the file manager. Long operations run concurrently: a second copy job can run while another is still in progress, and different operations can run alongside one another.
EF Commander also includes folder synchronization for keeping a notebook or a location on the local network aligned with a workstation.
Batch renaming
The multirename tool applies user-defined naming rules to numerous files in one operation. Instead of entering a replacement name separately for each item, you define how the group should be named and process it together.
Those rules can use information from MP3 files and EXIF metadata in photographs. This makes the rename tool relevant to music and photograph collections as well as groups of ordinary documents.
Archive formats and file splitting
EF Commander can package files or entire folders using its internal archive tools. Its supported archive formats include ZIP, Zip64, 7-Zip, RAR, TAR and GZIP, along with disc image and container formats such as ISO, UDF and WIM.
Large files can also be divided into smaller parts and later reassembled. This is a different operation from compression: the split and merge tools handle the parts of a file, while the archive tools package selected content into an archive.
Remote transfers
The integrated transfer client connects to FTP, SFTP, FTPS and SCP destinations. SFTP, FTPS and SCP provide options for secure connections; ordinary FTP remains a distinct protocol choice.
Download resumption lets an interrupted download continue, and FXP supports transfers between servers.
Built-in viewers and editors
The internal viewer opens supported pictures and movies, while thumbnails give an overview of an image collection. Quick view provides another way to inspect content during file management. XnView and IrfanView can serve as add-ons to extend the range of formats available in the viewer, quick view and thumbnail displays.
For changes to the files themselves, EF Commander includes both text and hexadecimal editors. Text editing works with character content; hexadecimal editing exposes the file’s byte values. The editors handle files within the limits of available system resources.
Extending EF Commander with plug-ins
External plug-ins can extend archive handling, viewing, file-system access and content functions. The supported plug-in formats include WLX, WCX and WFX, allowing those extensions to become part of the file manager’s existing tools.
Audio playback
EF Commander’s audio player supports MP3, Ogg/Vorbis, FLAC, WMA and WAV files. Playlists organize the playback sequence, and ID3 support lets the player use track information associated with music files.
Audio can continue playing in the background while you work with files. Winamp decoding plug-ins can add playback formats beyond those handled internally.
File integrity
The checksum tools create and verify values in SFV, MD5, BLAKE3 and SHAx formats. A saved checksum provides a reference against which the file can be checked later, helping identify content that has changed during storage or transfer. This checks the file’s data without relying on its name alone.
Disc burning
EF Commander can send CD and DVD burning work to Nero Burning ROM. Nero is required for this function; disc writing is an integration with that program rather than an independent burning engine.
Editions
EF Commander is paid software with a 30-day unregistered trial and a reminder screen. EF Commander Free is a separate file manager offering folder browsing, searching, viewing and editing.
