Google App is a search application for Android that lets you find information using words, speech, photographs, and a live camera view. Alongside web results, it brings together Google Lens, conversational search, song identification, and a feed of articles and videos related to your interests. Its search functions use an internet connection, and feature availability varies by country and language.
For direct searches, the Google Search widget provides shortcuts from the home screen, including access to Lens and AI Mode.
Google Lens and Circle to Search
Google Lens gives a search something to look at. You can photograph an object or use a screenshot to look for matching products, related pictures, and information about what appears in the image. It can identify plants and animals or locate visually similar items for sale. Adding words to the image query narrows its meaning, such as asking for a different color of a pictured product.
Visible text provides another kind of input. Pointing the camera at a menu or sign produces a translation, while a photographed math, physics, or word problem can lead to a step-by-step explanation. Reverse image search can also find an image’s source and related information, extending the search beyond the object in the picture.
On supported Android phones, Circle to Search starts from something already on the screen. Circling, highlighting, scribbling over, or tapping text, an image, or video starts a search without switching applications. This feature is limited to selected premium phones and supported languages and locations.
AI Mode
Google App supports questions that continue across several exchanges. In AI Mode, you can type, speak, or supply a photograph, then ask follow-up questions about the response. Answers include links to other pages so you can move from the generated explanation to material on the web.
AI Overviews present a summary of key information within search results. From there, a follow-up question can continue the subject in AI Mode.
Image creation
Image tools also use AI Mode and Lens. Nano Banana can generate images in AI Mode or transform photographs in Lens, where these functions are available. Image creation and transformation are restricted to selected languages and locations.
Search Live
Search Live combines a real-time voice conversation with the camera. Instead of submitting a single photograph, you can show what you are looking at while asking questions aloud. Google App responds during the conversation and displays web links for further reading.
Song search
The microphone can search for music as well as spoken questions. Google App can attempt to identify a song playing nearby, or use a melody you hum when you do not know the title or lyrics.
