IrfanView is a Windows image viewer built for opening files quickly and moving through a folder with the keyboard. It can crop, rotate, resize, adjust colors, inspect metadata, create contact sheets, and convert groups of files without opening a full photo project. IrfanView applies direct changes to the current image or writes a converted copy. It does not maintain editable layers or a nondestructive catalog like a full photo editor.
Folder browsing
Opening one image lets IrfanView move to the previous or next supported file in the same folder. The separate Thumbnails window builds a visual index and can select several files for another action. Sorting by filename, date, or image information changes the browsing order without renaming the files themselves.
Large RAW photographs can take noticeably longer to decode than JPEG files. The thumbnail may also come from an embedded preview rather than a full render of the sensor data. A quick preview is useful for selection, but color and detail can differ from the result produced by a dedicated RAW processor.
Batch conversion
IrfanView’s Batch Conversion dialog turns many source images into a chosen output format. Advanced options can resize, crop, rotate, change color depth, add canvas space, or place text on every output. Batch Rename uses a filename pattern and sequence numbers, while the combined mode converts and renames during one run.
The input list and destination folder deserve a test with two disposable files. A mistaken output path can place converted images beside originals, and a broad rename pattern can produce names that no longer identify their source. JPEG output also has its own quality setting; a higher number can create a file larger than the original without restoring detail already lost.
Lossless JPEG work
IrfanView has special JPEG operations for rotation, flipping, metadata comments, and rebuilding the embedded EXIF thumbnail. These routes can avoid recompressing the image data when their alignment requirements are met. Ordinary Save As follows the selected JPEG compression settings instead.
A crop or rotation may need boundaries aligned to JPEG blocks for a fully lossless result. IrfanView can adjust the selection, which means the output edge may differ slightly from the rectangle first drawn. When exact pixel boundaries matter more than avoiding recompression, the user must choose that priority consciously.
Plugins extend formats
The base installation does not carry every decoder and export component. IrfanView Plugins add support for more media types and operations. The plugin package must match the 32-bit or 64-bit IrfanView installation. Mixing architectures leaves functions missing even when the files appear in the program folder.
Some formats depend on components outside that plugin archive. HEIC viewing can require the related Windows image extensions, while PDF tasks can depend on another interpreter. A format listed in documentation therefore may not open on a clean computer until its extra component arrives.
Text and metadata
IrfanView can display EXIF and IPTC data and change selected comment fields. Batch work can use placeholders drawn from file information when building captions or destination folders. Metadata edits do not automatically correct a wrong camera clock or prove that the embedded location is accurate.
Adding text through the batch dialog burns visible pixels into the output image. It is different from changing an IPTC caption that stays inside metadata. Keeping one untouched source copy preserves the option to use a different caption, size, or language later.
Slideshows and printing
IrfanView assembles selected files into a slideshow and can create contact sheets for a folder. Print controls fit an image to a page or use a chosen physical size. Printer margins can still crop an edge when the requested size reaches outside the printable area. A preview and one test page avoid repeating that error across a large set.
