IsoBuster is a Windows data recovery program for reading files from media that Windows cannot open or no longer shows correctly. It works with CDs, DVDs and Blu-ray discs, hard drives and SSDs, USB flash drives, memory cards, floppy and Zip disks, and the hard disks inside many DVD and PVR recorders. A free edition handles basic optical disc recovery, while paid Personal, Professional and Enterprise licenses add file systems, image types and forensic tools.

Reading the media layout

When you select a drive or image file, IsoBuster reads the medium in its own code instead of relying on Windows. It lists every session, track and partition, followed by the file systems inside them. This exposes older sessions on multisession discs, hidden partitions and media that Windows reports as unformatted.

Supported file systems include ISO9660, Joliet and UDF on discs, FAT, exFAT, NTFS and ReFS, Apple HFS and HFS+, Linux EXT and XFS, and several console and retro formats. Right-clicking any track, partition, folder or file shows the operations available for it, starting with extraction to another drive.

Finding lost and deleted files

If the needed files are not in the tree, IsoBuster’s “Find missing files and folders” command scans the selected session or partition. It first explores the file systems it already knows, so nothing is listed twice. It then reads every sector and analyses the data for traces of deleted files, damaged directories and earlier file systems.

Results appear as new branches. Recovered UDF entries go into a Lost and Found folder. On write-once discs such as CD-R, earlier UDF file systems appear as old versions that can restore a previous layout or document. Items whose names were lost become “Recovered File” or “Recovered Directory”. IsoBuster inspects nameless files to assign an extension such as .jpg or .wav. The same scan handles FAT and NTFS undelete, quick-formatted DVD+RW discs and DVD video structures.

Recovery by file signature

When no usable file system remains, IsoBuster identifies files by recognizable patterns in their data. Each file runs from its signature to the next one, without names or dates. A maximum size setting trims trailing data, and users can edit entries when they know the real boundaries. IsoBuster reliably finds common types such as JPEG photos; others have no detectable signature.

Handling read errors

For scratched discs and failing drives, IsoBuster offers several retry mechanisms and a configurable pause between attempts. If a sector still fails during extraction, the user can retry, skip it, skip all further bad sectors or quit. When writing an image, IsoBuster can omit a bad sector or replace it with zeros or placeholder data.

A surface scan reads the whole medium and reports how many sectors failed. Files stored in those areas receive an error icon, and IsoBuster can produce a list of damaged files.

Managed images for damaged discs

A managed image is IsoBuster’s resumable image format, made of one IBP file and one or more IBQ files. The program copies the medium from start to end, marks blocks it could not read, and lets the job stop and resume later. Completing the image retries only the gaps, and a second drive can fill areas the first could not read. Scans and extraction then run from the hard drive instead of the slow, damaged disc.

Image files and cloning

IsoBuster opens many image formats, including ISO, BIN/CUE, NRG, MDS/MDF, CCD, DMG, virtual machine disks such as VMDK, VDI and VHD, forensic E01 and AFF files, and console disc images. Users can browse and extract images like physical media. They can save a disc or image as ISO or BIN with a CUE sheet, in user data or raw mode.

The program can also clone a drive or partition to another drive or partition. It can write an opened disk image back to a hard drive, USB stick or SD card. Cloning overwrites the target, including its partitions.
