Overview

KeePassXC stores credentials and related records in a local encrypted KDBX database. Groups organize entries, while each entry can hold a username, password, website addresses, custom attributes, attachments and time-based one-time-password data. KeePassXC does not require an online account. The KDBX file remains the object that must be copied or synchronized if the user wants the same vault on another device.

An entry can hold more than login fields

Password and passphrase generators can write new secrets into an entry. Edit history retains earlier entry states inside the database, and attachments store files with the record. The command-line interface, Auto-Type and SSH-agent integration expose selected vault data through different workflows.

Opening an attachment extracts it to a temporary file outside the encrypted database. If another program edits that file, KeePassXC asks whether to import the changed copy back or discard it. Until that decision, the working file exists in the operating system’s temporary area rather than only inside KDBX encryption.

Browser integration needs two running parts

Browser filling requires KeePassXC on the desktop and the KeePassXC browser extension. The user must enable Browser Integration under the desktop settings and pair the browser through a named connection. The database also needs to remain unlocked and KeePassXC must keep running when the extension requests credentials or passkey operations.

Reusing an existing connection name overwrites the earlier association. The browser profile that owned the old association then loses access until it pairs again. Sandboxed Flatpak or Snap browsers generally cannot reach the desktop integration path, apart from the specifically documented Ubuntu Firefox Snap case.

Auto-Type follows a configured sequence

Auto-Type sends fields and key actions to the active window according to an entry sequence. It does not verify that the focused window belongs to the intended website or application. Switching focus before the sequence finishes can type a password into another window.

Browser integration uses site association instead of only window focus, while Auto-Type can work with programs that have no browser extension. They solve different fill problems and expose different mistakes. A stored TOTP seed can generate rotating codes inside KeePassXC, but anyone who gains the unlocked database can reach both the password and its second-factor seed.

The unlock factors still need recovery planning

A hardware key can participate in database unlock through challenge-response. It strengthens the unlock combination but also becomes a required object. Losing the only configured key without another usable database credential can block access.

Database reports can find weak or reused credentials, while export creates data outside the encrypted vault in the chosen format. Before an import, export or synchronization change, a separate KDBX backup protects against database damage. KeePassXC keeps the vault local; it cannot recover a missing KDBX file from an account server that never held it.
