Samplitude Pro X is a digital audio workstation for Windows. It records, edits, mixes and masters music and other audio projects, and delivers the finished result as files or CD masters. MAGIX originally developed the program. Boris FX now develops and sells it simply as Samplitude, with the same development team behind it. It is commercial software offered with a free trial. It comes in two editions: Samplitude for musicians and engineers who handle their own productions, and Samplitude Suite for studios that deliver work to clients.
Audio engine and recording
Samplitude runs on a hybrid audio engine that processes audio in floating point and manages latency in two ways. Samplitude keeps tracks at low latency while recording or monitoring them live. It hands heavy processing to a separate high-latency engine, so large plugin chains do not compromise live monitoring.
For vocal and instrument sessions, the Take Composer collects every recorded take of a passage and assembles the best parts into a single comp directly in the arrangement.
Object-based editing
The central idea in Samplitude Pro X is that every clip in the arrangement is an independent object. Each object carries its own fades, volume and processing. This lets you treat a single word in a vocal or one drum hit differently from the rest of the track without splitting it onto another track.
Double-clicking an object opens the Object Editor, which gives that clip a complete channel strip with plugins, sends and automation. All of this is non-destructive: Samplitude calculates the result during playback, and the source audio stays untouched.
Other editing tools include:
- élastique time-stretching and pitch-shifting from zplane for changing tempo or pitch without the other
- ARA2 integration, so plugins such as Melodyne, ReSing or MTrackAlign work on the audio inside the session instead of through a separate transfer
Samplitude Suite adds spectral editing at track level. It isolates and removes short sounds such as a cough or a clap from the frequency display rather than cutting the waveform.
Mixer, routing and automation
Automation lanes in Samplitude can show many parameters at once. The monitoring section manages several monitor paths, with or without effects, and includes talkback for communicating with performers.
VCA faders control groups of channel levels, and you can insert external hardware effects like plugins.
The Suite edition adds the FX Routing Matrix, which sends any channel of a track to any plugin input and then to any output channel.
Surround and Dolby Atmos
The standard edition of Samplitude mixes up to 5.1 surround. Samplitude Suite extends this to immersive formats from 5.1.2 to 7.1.4 with native Dolby Atmos support. Its ADM Editor manages the ADM metadata that describes object positions and channel beds, from creation through to export.
You can place sources with the Spatial Panner in a 2D view or an optional 3D cube. You can also draw movements as automation.
Effects, amp modeling and restoration
Both editions of Samplitude Pro X include a dynamic EQ and restoration tools for removing hiss, clipping and noise. They also include Vandal for physically modeled guitar and bass amplifiers, and am|track compressors with tape saturation. Samplitude supports third-party VST3 effects and instruments, along with MIDI plugins.
Samplitude Suite enlarges each of these areas. It adds full sets of compressors, gates and limiters, tape and tube coloration effects and more Vandal models. BandRack splits a track into frequency bands and runs any VST3 plugin on each band separately.
The Suite also bundles third-party tools, among them CrumplePop for AI noise removal from voice recordings, SoundApp ARA for AI stem separation, Melodyne Essential and SOUND FORGE.
MIDI, instruments and notation
Samplitude handles composition as well as recording. It ships with virtual instruments including synthesizers, samplers and grooveboxes; the Suite adds orchestral, guitar, brass, percussion, drum and organ instruments. The MIDI editor works on notes, velocity, pitch bend and other events with quantization. Samplitude supports MPE for expressive controllers. A notation view displays MIDI data as a score.
Mastering and export
For mastering, Samplitude provides meters for peak level, loudness, frequency and phase. WaveColor tints waveforms according to their frequency content. The sMax11 limiter offers several modes. In the Suite it also detects inter-sample peaks, and EBU R128 loudness measurement is available.
Multi-export renders each track as its own file, complete with effects and routing, without soloing tracks by hand. Samplitude can export several ranges or selected tracks in one pass. Audio exports include WAV, Broadcast WAV, AIFF, FLAC, MP3, AAC and OGG Vorbis. You can exchange projects with other systems as MIDI, AAF, OMF or EDL. Samplitude burns Red Book CD masters. The Suite adds DDP images for pressing plants and a plugin that previews how a mix sounds as MP3 or AAC.
Video and remote control
Samplitude Pro X can load video for scoring and sound-to-picture work. Its video engine plays 4K footage with GPU acceleration and imports common formats including MPEG, H.264, HEVC and AV1.
OSC remote support lets phones, tablets or a Stream Deck control transport, editing and mixing over a network. Samplitude also supports EUCON control surfaces.
