O&O Defrag Server analyzes and optimizes storage on Windows servers and workstations. It reorganizes fragmented HDD files, provides SSD-specific maintenance, and schedules jobs around server activity. The Server Edition is paid software, with an evaluation available.
Drive analysis and reports
Analysis examines file arrangement without starting defragmentation. It produces a fragmentation figure and identifies fragmented or particularly large files in a report. Multiple drives can be analyzed together, with their arrangement shown in a graphical block view.
O&O Defrag Server can generate HTML reports after analysis and optimization. Drive and file-system details, the job performed and its results allow before-and-after comparison. Report history retains up to 999 reports per computer, then replaces older entries.
Drive optimization
On an HDD, O&O Defrag Server brings separated file fragments together and consolidates unused gaps. Methods can also sort files by name, access or modification date. The choice determines the rearrangement performed and its time and memory use.
| Method | Storage target | Work performed |
|---|---|---|
| STEALTH | HDD | Defragments files with a lighter, less thorough free-space consolidation and lower memory use. |
| SPACE | HDD | Combines file fragments and moves files to create larger contiguous free areas. |
| COMPLETE | HDD | Defragments and sorts the data set by file name, last access or modification date; this takes more time and memory. |
| SOLID/Complete | SSD or HDD | Reduces fragments, closes gaps in a further pass and follows with SOLID/Quick cleanup. |
| SOLID/Quick | SSD | Performs shorter maintenance using SSD-native functions and additional cleanup mechanisms. |
File and folder exclusions keep selected data out of a job. A size threshold can skip very large files, leaving them fragmented. Switching between COMPLETE sorting methods can lengthen subsequent runs because the data must be reordered again.
ATA TRIM tells the SSD which areas no longer contain needed data. Its controller can then reclaim those areas for its own storage management.
Automatic optimization selects a method according to storage type. Individual jobs also allow a method to be assigned to each drive. This lets one job use different strategies for the HDDs and SSDs it includes.
HDD speed zones
Speed zones group system and application files, user data, and rarely used or large files into logical HDD regions. File-name and path rules determine placement. Individual-drive rules override global rules, and each zone uses consolidation or a chosen sorting order.
OPTIMIZE consolidates free space within zones; OPTIMIZE/Quick also moves misplaced files to their assigned zones. OPTIMIZE/Complete rearranges the whole data set using each region's strategy and takes longer. Zone ordering applies to HDDs, while SSD controllers manage physical block distribution.
Scheduled optimization
Scheduled jobs combine a start time or recurring schedule with selected drives, methods and a fragmentation threshold. A maximum runtime confines maintenance to a window. Unfinished work resumes on the next run.
Jobs can be edited, duplicated or disabled without deleting their settings. A missed job can run when the computer next starts if its run-later option is enabled. Optional Windows Event Log entries record maintenance activity.
Before-and-after batch commands coordinate optimization with local services. For example, a command can stop a service before maintenance and another restart it afterward. These commands run under the system account on the target computer.
Activity controls
O&O ActivityMonitor limits CPU use and delays optimization when a drive or the processor is busy. A program exclusion list prevents overlap with specified backup applications or antivirus scans. Physically separate drives run together or sequentially; parallel jobs increase system load.
IntensiveOptimize
IntensiveOptimize runs in a separate Windows maintenance environment with O&O Defrag alone. It can access system files locked during normal use, interrupting ordinary work. BitLocker-encrypted drives can be optimized after unlocking through a supported authentication method.
System maintenance tools
The accompanying tools handle other parts of local maintenance:
- Check & Repair examines Windows system files and the component store, presents detected inconsistencies, and provides repair actions for supported problems.
- DiskCleaner analyzes selected categories such as temporary files, caches and update leftovers, then removes the chosen data and records the cleanup results. Locked or in-use files remain untouched, and Recycle Bin contents and indexing-cache data are excluded from its initial selection.
- AppBuster presents installed applications for removal, while StartManager lets administrators disable unnecessary or faulty Windows startup entries.
