PlayStation App is Sony’s mobile companion for an account for PlayStation and linked PS4 or PS5 consoles. It handles Store purchases, game-library browsing, messages, voice chat, trophies, remote downloads, selected console storage tasks, and supported PS5 captures. PlayStation App does not stream console gameplay by itself; Sony uses PS Remote Play for that separate job. Several controls also depend on the console remaining linked, online, and correctly configured.
Link the console
Signing into the app identifies the account, while console linking connects remote actions to a particular machine. A PS5 can also use the app to scan a sign-in code. The account region controls Store content and payment availability.
A console that belongs to another account, has lost its link, or sits fully powered off cannot accept every remote request. Rest Mode is different from shutdown. The console must keep its Internet connection active during rest for downloads, storage checks, or remote launch commands.
Downloads happen there
Buying a game in PlayStation App adds it to the account library. Starting a download tells the selected console to retrieve it. The phone does not download the console package and later copy it across.
Storage space, console status, licence region, and pending updates can delay the job. A notification confirms completion only after the console reports it. Mobile connectivity on the phone cannot compensate for an offline console at home.
Storage control is narrow
PlayStation App can show PS5 storage and delete games from internal or attached extended storage. It cannot move or copy games between storage locations through the app. Deleting a game removes installed data, while saved data follows its own local or cloud rules.
This difference matters when making room remotely. Removing the wrong large title may create another download later, and deleting installation data does not cancel every licence or subscription.
Captures expire quickly
After capture upload is enabled, supported screenshots and short non-4K video clips from PS5 can appear in PlayStation App. Clips must fit Sony’s duration and resolution limits. Earlier captures do not upload retroactively merely because the switch is now on.
The cloud copy remains visible for 14 days. Download an important capture to the phone before that window ends. Sharing a video can consume substantial mobile data, and a clip may contain microphone or party audio when the console recorded those sources.
Chat follows the account
Game Base supports text, images, voice recordings, parties, and voice chat. A message sent on the phone belongs to the same PlayStation conversation seen on supported consoles. Party notifications can be changed per conversation.
Account security matters because the app can reach purchases and social contacts. Use account protection and review signed-in devices. A message from a friend account does not guarantee that the friend still controls that account.
Store and streaming differ
The integrated Store can purchase and queue content, but ownership does not guarantee that every title runs on every linked console or remains available through a subscription. Check platform, edition, add-on requirements, and region before payment.
For actual remote gameplay, PlayStation App hands the task to PS Remote Play when that app is installed. The two apps share the account and console context but perform different work. Treating the Store companion as the streaming client leads to a missing-control problem that no console relink can solve.
