Overview

ProgDVB is a television and radio viewer built around broadcast sources and channel lists. It can work with compatible tuner hardware, satellite equipment, and network streams, then place those sources inside one Windows interface for watching, recording, and scheduling. ProgDVB does not contain a universal catalogue of free channels. The user must have a working source, configure it, and scan or import the channels that source carries.

Choose the source

Initial setup begins with the device or network source rather than the video window. A hardware tuner needs its driver and the correct ProgDVB module. Satellite reception also depends on tuner settings and the physical dish path. A network stream needs a reachable address. Installing ProgDVB without one of these inputs leaves the channel list empty.

After the source works, a channel scan builds the list. Signal strength, frequency data, and device settings determine what appears. If a tuner works in another player but not here, check which application currently owns the device; many tuners cannot send the same live stream to two programs at once.

Build the guide

The electronic program guide can appear as a grid or a list. ProgDVB can receive guide data with a broadcast or import JTV and XMLTV files. Imported data is useful when the source carries incomplete scheduling information, but its channel names must match the names in the ProgDVB database.

A small difference in punctuation or spelling can leave a guide channel unmapped. The mapping window shows which names correspond and lets the user assign a guide entry to the correct channel. Time offset also needs attention when the guide uses a different zone. Otherwise a correct program title can appear at the wrong hour.

Pause live television

Timeshift writes a rolling buffer while a channel plays. Pausing stops the viewing position while ProgDVB continues receiving the broadcast. The user can then resume or move backward within the buffered period. This is temporary storage, not an ordinary saved recording.

The buffer can sit in memory or on disk. A large disk buffer consumes free space, while a memory buffer competes with other programs. The 32-bit build also has a practical memory ceiling. Changing the channel resets the buffer, so material from the previous channel disappears even if the timeshift slider had not reached its end.

Record the stream

ProgDVB can record immediately, from the scheduler, or from an EPG entry. TS keeps the received transport stream with relatively low processing demand and can preserve several audio tracks or subtitles when the selected edition supports those options. The tradeoff is a larger file than a more compressed output.

Set the destination before a long recording and use the second path option when the first drive may fill. FAT32 cannot hold one recording beyond its file-size limit, so splitting by size or time may be necessary on old storage. A weak signal still produces errors in the saved stream; recording cannot reconstruct packets the tuner never received.

Schedule around reality

The scheduler can create recordings, reminders, or timed commands. Extra minutes before and after a program compensate for broadcasters that do not follow the published time exactly. A task can also trigger an action after recording, including standby or shutdown.

Confirm the channel, clock, and destination with a short test before leaving ProgDVB unattended. A correct EPG title does not guarantee a correct channel mapping. A sleeping computer, occupied tuner, or full drive can still defeat a well-timed task.

Pick the right build

The 64-bit ProgDVB build loads only 64-bit codecs, modules, and plug-ins. An older 32-bit component can therefore disappear after a move to the 64-bit build. The official download page describes the 32-bit build as the simpler setup and allows it on 64-bit Windows.

Choose architecture according to the components required by the actual television source, not merely the Windows architecture. Keep codec and plug-in bitness consistent with ProgDVB before troubleshooting a black picture or a missing module.
