Overview

Rescuezilla is a bootable environment for creating disk images and restoring them while the installed operating system remains offline. The user writes its image to a USB drive, starts the computer from that drive and works through a graphical desktop. Rescuezilla can copy a whole disk or selected partitions into an archive, or clone one physical drive directly to another. It does not watch personal files continuously or keep versioned changes in the background.

Backup and Clone create different results

Backup reads a source disk and writes an image archive to separate storage or a network share. That archive remains available until the user starts Restore and selects a destination. Clone skips the intermediate archive. It reads one device and writes directly to another, so both devices must remain connected during the operation.

Restore and Clone can replace the destination partition table and stored data. The user must identify the target by model, capacity and partition layout rather than by drive letter alone. Choosing the wrong destination can erase the disk that was meant to hold the only usable copy.

Clonezilla images work in both directions

Rescuezilla can restore an image that Clonezilla created, and Clonezilla can restore an image created by Rescuezilla. Verify Image checks an existing archive separately from restoration. Verification can find an unreadable or damaged image, but it cannot prove that another computer will boot the restored operating system. Hardware changes and the restored operating system still determine that result.

Image Explorer carries a beta label. It mounts compatible images so the file manager can reach individual files without restoring the entire disk. Its documented containers include VDI, VMDK, VHDX, QCOW2 and raw images. The beta workflow has narrower compatibility than Backup, Restore and Clone, so failure to mount one image does not establish that the main restore path cannot read it.

A smaller disk needs preparation

Free space inside the source filesystem does not make its partition layout fit automatically on a smaller destination. Rescuezilla does not shrink that layout during Restore. The official workflow shrinks the source partitions with GParted before creating a replacement image, and it needs separate storage for that image. This adds a destructive partitioning step before the normal backup workflow begins.

An image can also lack the partition-table information Rescuezilla expects. A missing sfdisk warning can require the user to create a suitable destination layout and map source partitions onto prepared target partitions. A blank destination with several source partitions therefore needs more than selecting the image and pressing Restore.

The live environment has hardware and network limits

A blank desktop after the language screen requires another boot with Graphical Fallback Mode. That path lowers display resolution to improve graphics compatibility. An SMB destination needs its UNC path, account name and password. Older network storage may also need the legacy SMB option before the share mounts.

The standalone package has a narrower tested surface than the bootable USB route. It can require additional image-mounting components for Image Explorer. Some installations also need the nbd module added to the boot configuration and a restart; without that preparation, drive identification can remain stuck. The bootable environment avoids depending on the damaged system that Rescuezilla is supposed to recover.
