PaintTool SAI is a raster drawing workspace built around pen strokes, layers, color composition, and pressure-sensitive input. It changes pixels on a canvas rather than arranging page-layout objects or editing vector paths. A Wintab-compatible digitizer can vary the stroke with pen pressure, while the drawing engine smooths edges and keeps high-precision color data for layer composition.
Pen input
Pressure depends on the tablet driver as well as the selected brush. PaintTool SAI expects the Wintab interface. Some N-trig drivers do not follow that interface closely enough for the default setting, and the official workaround changes TabletMouseSimulation in the misc.ini file. That adjustment belongs to the program folder and should be recorded before later reinstallations overwrite local settings.
The stroke stabilizer also changes how the pen feels. Settings S-1 through S-7 delay the visible stroke so the program can smooth the movement. A delayed line is therefore not always a performance failure. Lowering the stabilizer distinguishes intentional lag from a driver fault or another process consuming the processor.
Canvas memory
PaintTool SAI uses sixty-four bits per pixel in working memory and does not compress that memory. The choice favors drawing speed and color calculations, but a large canvas with many layers can consume memory quickly. The Maximum Canvas Size setting reserves space for the allowed canvas and leaves less memory for layers, even when the current drawing is smaller.
Setting that maximum to an extreme value can cause a memory-shortage error for each layer. Matching it to the size of the current work leaves more room for actual layer data. On a machine that starts swapping memory to disk, switching between programs can become slow even before the drawing window shows an explicit error.
Files and recovery
The SAI format checks damaged data strictly. A file that no longer opens can point to an interrupted write or failing storage, not merely an unsupported picture. Unexpected power loss and unsafe removal of a USB drive can leave an incomplete file. Keeping another copy on separate storage is safer than relying on one working document.
The file viewer can appear outside the visible monitor area and make Open or Save seem frozen. Pressing Escape closes the hidden viewer, and Reset All Window Positions brings it back. PaintTool SAI also has a protection mechanism for abnormal termination, but it does not remove the need for regular saves and separate backups.
Display constraints
The first major generation does not handle high-DPI displays correctly. Windows may leave the interface unscaled, and the official guidance may require lowering the screen resolution below roughly 1920 by 1200. That compromise makes controls readable but reduces the desktop area available around the canvas.
Installation location matters too. Placing that generation inside Program Files can trigger UAC-related malfunction, so the installer uses a separate folder. The license arrives as a digital certificate and must remain in the program folder. Copying only the executable to another location does not carry that certificate or the related brush and texture files.
Trial and previews
The trial runs with full drawing functions for thirty-one days, then disables Open and Save immediately. An unsaved painting at the deadline can be lost back to its last saved state. Anyone evaluating PaintTool SAI should save or export work before the trial expires rather than waiting for the final session.
Technical preview builds follow a different risk level from the stable line. They can contain serious defects, and the publisher tells users to keep multiple backups of important work. A preview can be useful for checking a new drawing engine, but it should not become the only place that holds an active project.
