Overview

Topaz Photo AI app processes photographs with trained image models that reduce noise, sharpen blurred detail, enlarge small images, recover faces, and protect detected text. It analyzes pixels and metadata, then applies adjustable filters to a working image. Topaz Photo AI app creates processed output; it does not recover detail with certainty when the source never captured it. A generated edge or face feature can look plausible while differing from the original scene.

Autopilot reads defects

Autopilot examines file type, camera metadata, noise severity, blur, subjects, faces, and image dimensions when a photo loads. It can select filters and strengths according to those findings. Green indicators show which choices came from Autopilot.

The recommendation is a starting state, not proof that every detected subject or defect is correct. Fine texture can look like noise, deliberate motion can look like blur, and a small background face can attract recovery. Inspect the preview at full size before export.

Noise and blur differ

Denoise targets random variation and color speckling. Sharpen targets soft edges and blur. Applying high strength in both can strip skin texture or draw hard borders around objects, especially after heavy compression.

RAW Denoise works earlier in the image pipeline than ordinary denoise for rendered files. A JPEG has already passed through camera processing and compression, so it cannot return to the untouched sensor data. Choose the control that matches the input rather than treating every grainy image as the same problem.

Masks need inspection

Subject selection limits a filter to detected parts of the image. A mask can miss hair, transparent objects, fine branches, or a person partly hidden behind another object. The preview may look correct at Fit view while showing a visible boundary at normal size.

Topaz Photo AI app lets the user adjust the selection instead of processing the whole frame. Check edges against both bright and dark backgrounds. A halo around the mask can become more obvious after sharpening or resizing.

Faces can change

Topaz Photo AI app Recover Faces can target all faces, low-quality faces, the main subject, or none. It reconstructs facial detail in small or damaged faces. Strong recovery can alter identity cues, eye shape, skin marks, or expressions when the source contains too few pixels.

Use a lower strength for documentary or archival work and compare the processed face with the original. Turning face detection off also reduces processing time when the image has no relevant faces. Hair and neck controls determine whether nearby areas join the reconstruction.

Text needs protection

Preserve Text separates lettering from nearby image filters. This matters for signs, labels, book covers, and scanned documents where sharpening or generative repair can reshape characters. Detection can miss stylized lettering or treat a repeating pattern as text.

Zoom into small numbers and punctuation after processing. A readable-looking word can still contain a changed letter. Keep the original file when textual accuracy matters.

Batch settings can spread

Batch processing sends several images through the queue. Autopilot can analyze each image individually, while manual settings can be copied across a selection. Images shot under different conditions may need different models or strengths.

Applying Autopilot to selected images can overwrite filter settings already made on those images. Finish selection before pressing Apply, or split unlike photographs into separate batches. Review several outputs rather than judging the whole folder from the first preview.

Export can replace originals

Standalone export controls destination, filename, format, compression, and bit depth where the format supports it. RAW input saved through Preserve Input Format becomes DNG rather than returning to the camera’s original RAW container.

Allow Overwriting appears when the filename has no prefix, suffix, or applied-filter label. Enabling it can irreversibly replace the original image. Choose another folder or add a suffix until the processed result has been checked. When Topaz Photo AI app runs as a plugin, it sends the result back to the host editor instead of using these standalone export controls.
