Tux Paint is a drawing workspace made around the way young children choose tools and return to unfinished pictures. A child paints on one canvas with large buttons for brushes, stamps, shapes, text, erasing and special effects. Tux Paint keeps the ordinary file system out of the main workflow: Save places the picture in an internal gallery, while Open shows thumbnails of previous work. It changes the picture on the canvas and stores that result; it does not ask the child to manage folders or type a filename after every drawing.
The picture gallery
The first Save creates a gallery entry immediately. Saving again can replace the open picture or create another entry, depending on the configured save behavior and the choice shown to the child. This is easier than a normal Save As dialog, but it can confuse an adult who expects to find the picture beside ordinary documents. The Export command copies a saved drawing to the operating system’s Pictures folder when another program needs the file.
Open displays saved work as thumbnails. The child can resume a picture, start a slide show, or erase an entry. Erase moves the selected work out of the active gallery rather than turning the canvas white. Tux Paint can arrange selected pictures as a timed presentation and write the sequence as an animated GIF, so a series of drawings can become a simple animation without a separate editor.
Stamps with behavior
Tux Paint stamps are more than fixed clip-art images. A stamp can change size, mirror horizontally, flip vertically, rotate, and play a linked sound. The available controls depend on how the stamp author prepared the asset. Some stamps therefore expose several controls, while another stamp may allow only placement. A parent or teacher can add a private stamp collection, and an administrator can remove the entire Stamp tool when a smaller choice set works better.
The Magic tool collects effects that act on a point, a dragged area, or the complete picture. These effects do not share one interaction, so the child still has to watch the tool instructions beside the canvas. Interface complexity can be set to novice, beginner, or advanced. That choice changes how much control appears rather than changing the saved picture format.
Starters stay visible
A Starter can behave like a coloring page. Its outline remains above the child’s marks, while a separate background stays below them. Painting crosses behind the outline instead of covering it, and the eraser reveals the original background. That behavior protects the supplied drawing, but it also means the child cannot erase or repaint the outline itself. A Template starts with a complete background image and leaves new marks above it.
Custom starters and templates let a school prepare maps, letter shapes, worksheets, or scene backgrounds. Tux Paint also accepts extra fonts and stamp material in its data folders. Adults must place those resources in the correct personal or shared location; the child-facing gallery does not import a whole teaching pack by itself.
Printing has limits
The Print button can send the current picture to the default printer without opening the operating system’s full printer dialog. Holding the documented modifier can request that dialog, although the dialog may fail to appear while Tux Paint runs full screen on some systems. An administrator can disable printing or impose a delay between print jobs. Those controls matter in a classroom where repeated clicks could otherwise produce several copies before the child notices the printer.
