Overview

VSO Downloader watches for audio and video streams that a browser requests, then saves a selected stream as a local media file. It can also inspect a pasted page address or a URL copied to the clipboard. This differs from saving the web page itself: the page contains HTML and scripts, while VSO Downloader looks for the separate media requests that begin when playback starts.

Three detection paths

Manual mode accepts a typed or dragged page address and searches it for media. Clipboard mode repeats that search when a URL enters the clipboard. These paths work when a page exposes a usable media address, but modern players can hide the stream behind scripts, temporary tokens, or requests that exist only during playback.

Radar mode watches traffic created by the browser. The user opens the page and may need to press Play before VSO Downloader sees a candidate. Radar carries the browser context, so it has a better chance with a site that requires sign-in. It also sees unrelated requests made by the page, which can fill the queue with advertisements, previews, and small interface media.

Pick the real stream

One page can request several resolutions, separate audio, subtitle tracks, and advertising clips. VSO Downloader can display stream details and let the user choose resolution or subtitle language. The largest candidate is not always the complete video; it may be one segment, a silent picture stream, or an advertisement.

Media-size and MIME filters reduce noise. Host and extension blocks can stop repeated advertisements. A broad rule can also hide the wanted stream on another page, especially when a content network serves both ads and the main video from related hosts. Resetting filters is a necessary diagnostic when a previously detected site suddenly produces nothing.

Downloads can need assembly

Streaming sites may deliver a recording as many short pieces rather than one ordinary file. VSO Downloader collects the selected media and can process it into a final output. Closing the program, losing authentication, or letting a temporary address expire can interrupt that sequence before assembly finishes.

Per-item settings can force MP4, MKV, MOV, or MP3 output. Conversion creates another file after downloading. It takes extra time and can change quality when the target requires re-encoding. Keeping the original downloaded stream until the converted file plays correctly gives the user a fallback.

DRM stays protected

VSO Downloader does not decrypt Digital Rights Management. Its guide names Netflix as a service whose protected video it cannot save. Detecting a page request does not remove this boundary; the useful media can remain encrypted even when the traffic monitor sees manifests or short segments.

A failed DRM download is different from a detection error. Changing filters, replaying the page, or switching to Radar cannot turn protected content into an unprotected file. The owner of the media and the service terms also determine whether saving a stream is permitted, regardless of technical detection.

Browser context matters

Radar mode must run while the relevant browser session loads and plays the media. Private windows, proxy tools, security inspection, and browser updates can change what the monitor sees. If a page works only after sign-in, pasting its public URL into Manual mode may omit the session details that grant access.

VSO Downloader can limit simultaneous information lookups, downloads, and conversions. Higher limits use more network, processor, and disk activity and do not make a restricted server send data faster. A smaller queue makes it easier to confirm the correct title, resolution, subtitles, and destination before several similar files complete.
