Overview

WinMTR traces the network route between a Windows computer and a hostname or IP address, then repeats the test to collect latency and packet-loss measurements for each hop. A normal ping reports whether one destination responds and how long the reply takes. WinMTR also shows the routers along the path and keeps sending probes, so an intermittent problem can appear in a growing set of results instead of one isolated reply.

Repeated path tests

A test starts with a destination such as a website hostname or a server address. WinMTR discovers the route in the manner of traceroute and continues to send probes in the manner of ping. Each row corresponds to a hop on the path, while the changing measurements describe the replies received during the running session.

The Options panel changes the ping size, maximum number of hops, and interval between probes. The defaults suit a first check, but a very short run contains little evidence about a problem that occurs every few minutes. Waiting for a useful sample is part of the test. WinMTR does not repair the connection, restart a router, or identify which company owns every fault automatically.

Reading the route

The hop list helps separate a delay near the local network from one that appears farther along the route. Repeated high latency, packet loss, or timeouts can direct further investigation toward a segment. The destination row still matters because the purpose of the route is to reach that endpoint, not merely to make every intermediate router answer diagnostic probes.

MTR relies on ICMP return messages as it discovers and measures the path. A firewall or router can treat those diagnostic replies differently from ordinary web traffic. A blank or timed-out hop therefore needs comparison with later hops and the final destination. One missing response is not enough information to name a broken cable, overloaded server, or responsible provider.

When nothing happens

If WinMTR accepts an address but displays no progress, the official troubleshooting notes point first to antivirus and firewall controls. Those products can block the probes or replies. Configuring the relevant rule is more useful than repeatedly changing the destination text. Disabling protection for a test also changes the machine’s exposure, so the rule and time window should remain narrow.

The portable archive contains separate executables for 32-bit and 64-bit Windows. WinMTR does not need an installer, but the architecture still has to match. Running the 64-bit executable on a 32-bit system produces an execution error rather than a network result. Choosing the other build solves that specific error; changing firewall rules will not.

Saving evidence

WinMTR can copy results or export them as text or HTML. An export records the route sample for an ISP ticket or a comparison after changing a router, cable, or network. The report should include enough probes to show the pattern that prompted the complaint. A screenshot taken immediately after Start may contain only the first route discovery and miss the intermittent loss under investigation.

The host field keeps a history of earlier targets until Clear History removes them. That is convenient for retesting the same service, but it can also expose internal hostnames on a shared support computer. Clearing the list affects the saved target history; it does not delete report files that were exported elsewhere.
