Acronis True Image creates recoverable copies of files, partitions, or an entire system disk and can transfer one physical disk onto another. A backup stores data in an archive for later recovery. A clone writes the current partition layout and data directly to a destination drive. These jobs solve different problems: an archive keeps dated recovery points, while a clone prepares another disk to take the source disk’s place.
Choose the backup scope
A file-level job selects folders and documents. A disk or partition job captures the stored filesystem data and layout needed for broader recovery. An entire system image can restore Windows when ordinary file copying would leave out boot information and installed-program state.
Acronis True Image treats virtual disks separately. The official guide excludes virtual disks as sources in entire-PC and disk-level jobs. A virtual disk file can still enter a file-level backup, but that does not turn its internal partitions into an independently recoverable physical-disk image.
Separate clone and backup
Clone Disk reads one drive and writes its partitions to another. Automatic mode handles the layout for common replacements, while Manual mode can preserve sizes, distribute free space proportionally, or set partition sizes directly. A backup instead writes an archive to storage and leaves restoration for another time.
The destination choice in cloning is destructive. If it already has partitions, Acronis True Image asks for confirmation and later deletes them when the user proceeds. Identify disks by model, capacity, and connection rather than drive letter alone. Create and validate a backup before using the only spare disk as a clone target.
Check disk geometry
The Acronis True Image Clone Disk wizard does not handle dynamic disks. Source and destination also need the same logical sector size. A drive can report either common sector size regardless of its advertised capacity, so capacity alone does not prove compatibility.
A Windows clone written to an external USB drive may not boot as expected. Controller mode and the intended machine also matter. A clone moved to different hardware can need drivers and a separate recovery path even when every partition copied successfully.
Build rescue media
Rescue Media Builder places an independent Acronis True Image environment on removable storage. It starts when Windows cannot boot and can reach a local backup or supported network destination. Create the media before a failure, then start the computer from it once to verify that storage and input devices appear.
The simple builder normally chooses a recovery environment for the current computer. The manual path can select WinRE, WinPE, or Linux-based media and an architecture. Booting the media in a mode that conflicts with the system’s UEFI or legacy BIOS arrangement can leave a restored system unable to start.
Test the recovery path
A completed backup job proves that an archive was written, not that the whole recovery chain works. Validation checks archive consistency. A separate media boot confirms that firmware can start the recovery environment and that it sees the destination and backup location.
Keep at least one backup away from the source computer. An internal disk failure, theft, or destructive event can remove both the live data and an archive stored beside it. When cloud transfer stops, later runs can resume, but the first full upload can take much longer than subsequent change-only backups.
