Avidemux is a desktop video utility for removing sections, changing codecs or containers, applying filters, and saving one prepared output file. It suits jobs such as cutting an advertisement, resizing a clip, replacing an audio track, or converting a recording for another player. Avidemux does not use the layered multitrack timeline found in a full production editor. It works on one loaded source sequence and a defined output path.
Copy avoids encoding
Video Copy mode passes the existing compressed video into the output without decoding and encoding every frame. This saves time and preserves the compressed picture exactly. Audio Copy does the corresponding job for a compatible audio stream.
The chosen output container still has to accept those streams. Copying a codec into an unsuitable muxer can fail or create a file that the target player rejects. Changing only the filename extension does not change that compatibility.
Cuts follow keyframes
Compressed video stores complete pictures at selected keyframes and describes many surrounding frames relative to them. In Copy mode, the start of a kept section needs a suitable keyframe. A marker placed on an ordinary frame may move to a nearby valid point or create an inaccurate start.
Frame-exact cutting can require re-encoding around the boundary or the complete output. Avidemux makes the fast path easy, but the compression structure decides whether that path can honour the exact frame the user selected.
Filters require processing
Resize, crop, deinterlace, colour, subtitle, and related video filters act on decoded frames. They cannot alter pixels while Video Copy remains selected. A processing codec must encode the filtered result.
Re-encoding takes longer and can lose quality. A high bitrate cannot restore detail missing from the source, while a low bitrate can add blocking or blur. Test a short difficult section before processing a long recording.
Audio needs alignment
A container can carry different audio formats, channel layouts, and timing. Avidemux can copy a compatible track or encode it through the selected audio output. A delay control can correct a constant offset between sound and picture.
A fixed delay does not repair gradual drift caused by mismatched clocks or damaged timestamps. If sound begins in sync and ends out of sync, one offset merely moves the point where the error becomes obvious.
Markers define output
The A and B markers select the range that the next save or edit uses. Removing several sections takes deliberate marker placement and repeated operations. A mistaken range can discard the wrong material from the working sequence.
Keep the source untouched and save to a new name. Avidemux edits the prepared sequence and writes a new file; it does not create a reversible layered project that contains every editorial decision.
Jobs repeat settings
Projects and the job queue help repeat an established conversion. They remember instructions and source references rather than embedding every source file. Moving or renaming an input can break a queued task.
Automation magnifies both good and bad settings. Confirm the codec, muxer, dimensions, audio, markers, and output path on one file before queuing a folder. Avidemux can reduce repetitive clicking, but it cannot decide whether mixed sources need different treatment.
