Overview

IsoBuster is a storage inspection and recovery program for media that Windows cannot read normally. It can examine optical discs, hard drives, USB storage, memory cards, and disk-image files. Instead of relying only on the drive letter and file system that Windows accepts, IsoBuster shows lower layers such as sessions, tracks, partitions, file systems, folders, and sectors. The goal is to copy recoverable data to healthy storage, not repair the damaged source in place.

Pick the layer

A single disc or disk can appear several times in the left panel. An optical disc may contain more than one session or track. A hard drive may expose a physical device, partition table, partitions, and one or more file-system interpretations. Selecting a folder under a recognized file system leads to ordinary file extraction, while selecting the physical device leads to imaging or sector-oriented work.

This is the first practical obstacle for a new user. Two entries can display similar names but describe different structures. If the expected folder tree is visible, extracting from that tree is simpler than scanning the whole device. If the tree is missing or incomplete, a scan can search for additional file-system structures. Scan results still require judgment because an old partition or damaged duplicate can appear beside the current one.

Extract or image

File extraction copies selected folders and files to another location. Image creation reads the source as a larger block sequence and stores that sequence in an image file. An image is useful when the source is deteriorating because later recovery attempts can work from the copy, but it needs space close to the amount of media being read rather than only the size of the documents the user hopes to recover.

IsoBuster also distinguishes user-data extraction from raw extraction. On optical media, a raw sector can contain headers, error-correction information, or other bytes beyond the normal payload. Raw output is therefore not interchangeable with an ordinary ISO or recovered file. Selecting the wrong mode can create an output that another program does not understand.

Damaged reads

Unreadable sectors make recovery slow. IsoBuster can retry reads and continue around errors, but repeated attempts cannot recreate bytes that the drive never returns. A badly scratched disc or failing disk may spend a long time on one area. More retries are not always better when the device is physically degrading.

The destination must be separate healthy storage with enough free space. Saving extracted data back onto the source risks overwriting material that has not been recovered yet. The same rule applies when a lost partition still appears writable in Windows: recovery should read from it and write elsewhere.

Check the result

A successful extraction message means the selected read operation finished; it does not prove every recovered file is complete. Documents, archives, photos, and videos need to open correctly. Checksums can confirm that two copies match, but they cannot confirm that a damaged file matches an unavailable original.

IsoBuster exposes more of the medium than a normal file manager, which is why its tree can look crowded. Starting with the visible file system, moving downward only when necessary, and preserving the source before experimenting keeps the recovery process easier to understand.
