Leawo Tunes Cleaner is a music library cleanup utility for Windows and Mac. It scans an iTunes library or an ordinary folder of music files. It completes missing or incorrect song information, adds album artwork and removes duplicate tracks. Tunes Cleaner is a paid tool. Its free trial can scan and fix files but cannot apply the fixed results back to the library.
Four starting points
The main window of Leawo Tunes Cleaner offers four entries, each leading to a separate job:
- Start to Clean iTunes reads the iTunes library and looks for tracks with incomplete tags.
- Open Music Files runs the same check on a local folder outside iTunes, such as an MP3 collection or music copied from a phone.
- Clean-up Duplicates searches for repeated songs in iTunes or in added folders.
- Load Saved Result reopens a cleanup session that was saved before it was finished.
Fixing incomplete tags
After a scan, Tunes Cleaner sorts the problem tracks into categories. This lets the user handle missing information one category at a time instead of song by song. Fixes come from an online music database, which is why the program needs an internet connection. The user can tick individual files and fix only those, or press Fix All to process everything in the list. The user can pause fixing while it runs.
The program gives the library a health score before applying anything. It scores the library again after cleaning so the user can compare the two results. In Preferences, the General settings control which kinds of issues the program should fix. They also control whether it may replace a song’s original metadata.
Manual tag editing and artwork
Some tracks cannot be matched automatically and stay in the list as unrecognizable songs. For these, Leawo Tunes Cleaner includes a small tag editor opened from the edit icon next to each file. It accepts the song name, artist, album, genre, year and album cover. This lets the user type correct details and add artwork by hand for a track with no online match.
Writing changes back
The program holds corrections until the Apply button writes them to the original location: the iTunes library or the source music folders. The trial version leaves out this step. It shows what would change without changing the files.
The user does not have to finish cleaning a large library in one session. Save Project stores the files that are still unfixed, and Load Saved Result picks up the work later from where it stopped.
Duplicate song detection
The Clean-up Duplicates tab works separately from tag fixing. The user loads songs with Scan iTunes, with the Add button, or by dragging files from a folder into the window. Two detection modes are available:
- Quick Scan compares the stored song information. The user can choose matching criteria from title, artist, album, file size and play time. This determines how strict a match must be.
- Deep Scan uses acoustic fingerprinting, comparing the audio itself. This can identify the same recording even when its tags differ.
When the scan ends, Tunes Cleaner lists the duplicates it found and marks the copies it suggests removing. The user checks the files to delete and removes them in one batch with the Remove button.
Preferences and network settings
The gear icon at the bottom of the main window opens Preferences. Besides the fixing options, it holds the interface language and automatic update checks. It also holds proxy settings (type, host, port, user name and password) for connecting to the online database through a proxy server.
